Summary: Faith sees beyond the cold mask that Edward always wears and learns how he really feels about her.
In all her time with Edward, Faith had never really witnessed him experience any emotion. There had been his determination to destroy the monsters that haunted the night, and his obvious delight when they had cleaned out a nest of vampires. But he had never once shown her any emotion. Faith had come to believe that any Slayer who followed his direction would have made Edward content.
Yet as she felt her life bleeding out from the wound in her stomach, Faith saw that she was more than just a Slayer to Edward. It was a bittersweet moment for her as she looked into his eyes and saw the love there. She had wished that one day he would feel for her as she had felt for him, and now it was too late for her. It was too late for the both of them.
“Come on, Faith, you have to keep fighting,” Edward demanded.
“It’s too late for me.”
”Are you quitting on me, little girl?”
”I don’t wanna but I don’t have much of a choice.”
”No!”
”Edward, this isn’t how I wanted to go out, but I don’t have a choice anymore.”
”You have to fight this.”
”I can’t fight this, I am sorry.”
Faith moved her hand away from her stomach to show him the seriousness of the wound. Edward made an undistinguished sound of anguish as he took in the damage. She pulled his face up towards her and she placed her lips against his. The kiss was a gentle one that they both knew had come too late.
“I wish we had more time,” Faith said.
“You have to quit talking like this,” Edward protested, showing her a side that she would never have believed existed.
”You need to let me go and finish cleaning out this nest. There’ll be another Slayer called.”
”I don’t want another Slayer.”
”And I don’t wanna die, but we don’t have a choice in the matter. Now finish up the job we came to do.”
Edward didn’t say anything in response; instead he gave her one last kiss. He had waited too long to show her how he had felt and now he had to accept that it was too late. There was no time for regrets, since she was right in telling him to do his job. There was no way he could save her and destroy the nest, without destroying both of them. He could smell the scent of her imminent death as her eyes started to dull. He stood up and Edward slowly faded and in his place was Death.
