So today I was going to go get a NY state driver's license and hopefully an NYS registration for the car so I could stop getting pulled over by cops on my way home at night, and not worry about getting towed if I'm parked on the street ( Read more... )

Augh. I'm willing to deal with not having an in-state DL, but I need to jump through ALL THOSE HOOPS to get a registration as well. Possibly one less (I don't need the birth certificate for the registration), but it doesn't change the fact that I don't HAVE all of those things.

At least it makes a convincing argument if I get pulled over...

It's annoying as fuck, which is why I've lived here a year and haven't bothered to get one. Then again I don't have a car (and I'm still getting jury summons for California, oops).

YOU'RE IN THE SAME ROOM AS ME.

Once you get the birth certificate (or if you have the adoption documents with a birth date on it--I recall you saying you were adopted, right?) It appears to be a matter of filling out a piece of paper and mailing it somewhere to get a real live social security card. Of course, knowing government bureaucracy, it might take 6 weeks or more to get said social security card ( ... )

I can say, as someone who's gone through four SSCs in the last year, it's actually ridiculously easy to get them. I walked into the SS office at Iowa City's post office, asked for one, and I got it in the mail three days later. Also, they're free. IFRC I gave them my state ID card and that was all I needed the first time (the other times I didn't even need that because they knew me by face, but that's another story). So yeah, definitely get a SSC, it's not hard at all.
