Summary:  Why Quinn revealed Santana’s secret

A/N: This has been sitting in my file for ages so I thought I may as well post it. It's sort of more  of a friendship fic but there is a hint at a deeper relationship. To anyone following me on twitter, the new brittana fic I’ve been promising will be up this week. Thoughts and comments are always appreciated

“What are you doing?” I spun around at Santana’s harsh voice, spinning to see her entering the room.

“Who let you in?”

“Your mom.” She shrugged as I scowled - right now I wasn’t in the mood for talking , especially not to Santana.

“What are you doing?” she repeated, just as harshly, though I still didn’t answer her. “Did babygate seriously addle your brain enough that you thought the promise of smoke machines would get you reinstated?”

I fought to ignore the swift stab of pain that I felt at the mention of her and just continued to stare at the cheerio captain levelly.

“God, you really have lost yourself, haven’t you.” she huffed, smirking superiourly, though not fully able to conceal the concern in her eyes. I wanted to rebel against her words, to retort that I was still Quinn Fabray, but i couldn’t - she was right. I was willing to accept defeat and give up on my plans to become a Cheerio again, after one failed attempt.

“See, you’re not even willing to fight for what you want.” she taunted. “To take back your captaincy.”

“What would you have me do?” I demanded harshly “Sylvester turned me down and I’m out of options.”

“She turned you down because she can see your weakness as clearly as I can, your refusal to take advantage of situations.” She paused and gave me an appraising look. “Tell her about me.”

Now that caught me off guard. “San...?”

She was avoiding my gaze now “Sylvester will find out anyway given enough time and when she does she’ll demote me, even if there’s no one appropriate to fill my spot. You may as well use it to your advantage.” Her tone was harsh and impersonal, hiding how much I knew the thought of Sylvester finding out scared her. I crossed the room to where she stood with her arms crossed tightly and gently ran my fingers along her cheek.

“San,”

“See, this is what I mean,” she flinched away, finally looking up and meeting my gaze as I dropped my hand to my side “you refuse to take advantage of situations that’ll help you - a year ago you would have jumped at the opportunity to get one up on me with, or without my permission.”

“I’m not the same person I was a year ago.” I murmured quietly and Santana visibly relaxed.

“That much is apparent.” She remarked dryly, though with less of an edge than before. “Look, if you want to get back on the team then you have to make Sylvester remember why she thought you were a young version of her, whether true or not. I’m giving you a way to do that”

“Plus you dread the thought of Amber becoming captain if Sue find out about you from someone else?” I replied, teasingly, earning a glare. I briefly considered. “Fine, I’ll tell Sylvester, but she knows we’re friends so we’ll have to make her believe you didn’t agree to this.”

I saw a glint of determination and triumph enter her eyes as “Oh, don’t you worry about that; I know exactly how to convince her.”
