*History* [Uhura & Spock] Academic Vernacular

Starfleet Academy, 2256

If there was one thing that was frustrating about conducting linguistics courses at Starfleet, it was the general lack of interest in Xenolinguistics put for by most of the students. Though they were expected to interact with alien species and conduct themselves in a respectable and ethical manner while creating lasting ( Read more... )

Nyota didn't have another class until well after lunch. She had only been planning to take the professor's notes and head into the phonology lab to study for their next test in the mean time. His request didn't strike her as odd at all; on the contrary, it sent a thrill down her spine ( ... )

There were still things to attend to for the class and various messages to respond to, so as Uhura approached and waited for his inquiry he occupied his time with the computer in his hand. When he finally lifted his eyes to see if she was standing there yet, he noticed that she seemed somewhat anxious and decided to put the computer down on his desk. There was no reason in being his usual intimidating self when she was actually a respectable student ( ... )

Uhura was proud of herself and the work she'd done so far in her studies. She was good and better than that? She knew she was good. Confident now, she smiled at Commander Spock and answered honestly and earnestly.

"It's my goal to learn everything I can from the Academy and eventually serve Starfleet on the USS Enterprise as her Communications Officer."

Her dreams and aspirations weren't a secret to her friends, but she had very few close friends. Most people that met her found her ambitious and a workaholic. When she wanted to get something done, she did it, and most of her free time was spent in the computer labs or studying the languages she wanted to learn.

It wasn't a coincidence that she'd spent extra time learning the customs, language and culture of Vulcan. Her professor both intrigued her and impressed her. He was well known as someone who'd graduated at the top of his own class and come back to teach at the Academy and Uhura was glad that she'd been placed in several of his classes. She knew that she'd do well under him.

Ambitious was the first thought that popped in his head. Though she was usually focused and kept to her self, he took notice of her confidence when she spoke about her goals. With the way she said it, you could tell she knew it wasn’t just a goal, but a reality that just hadn’t come yet ( ... )

She had managed to keep silent for her phonology class, but she wasn't going to be as avoidant during her first day as an assistant and she made sure that she was professional looking and sounding when she knocked on his office door after her classes that afternoon.

"Commander." She nodded once at him and allowed a small smile, nothing too personal. It had been hard watching him in class as her dreams (what few she'd had) had been so kind as to play themselves out for her during her waking hours. And now, she was here and expected to work with him in close, cramped quarters.

And later, after you've been a good girl, you can go play in the labs, she promised herself. A reward of sorts for keeping her hands (and thoughts) to herself. She just had to make sure she made through the next few hours without making a further fool of herself. She could do that much, right? Right.

Leaving Uhura that night was difficult, but once he was away from her he could concentrate again. Convincing himself what he did was the most logical thing to avoid any awkwardness in their Student/Teacher relationship, he headed back to the lab to program for a few more hours before getting some sleep.

Even in class, the thoughts he had the previous night did not come back to him. She sat in her usual spot and was as engaged in class as he would expect, though there were many more questions and comments coming from other students than from her that day. He didn’t think of it as abnormal, considering what had happened.

However, when she entered his office with her usual confident demeanor and warm smile he couldn’t help but think of the events of the previous night. She must not be upset. Perhaps I have not hurt her.He stood up quickly and handed her a handheld computer, breaking the few moments of silence that followed her entrance. He was careful not to look at her face, for fear of him falling into the same mode he had before ( ... )

Very aware of the fact that he was avoiding looking directly at her, Uhura did her best to avoid the hurt feeling that washed over her. She had been sure that she would be okay with his detached demeanor, she'd been expecting it, even. But he wouldn't even LOOK at her and it stung.

Taking the handheld, she nodded, swallowed and began looking at the directions. The tasks weren't difficult and she wouldn't have any problems making sure that they would be done and done well. "Thank you, Commander."

She scanned the list once more and then told him with utmost confidence, "I should have these done and back to you before the end of the night."

If nothing else, she knew she really was the best for the job. And, as she'd promised herself, she planned on spending time in the labs after she'd finished the work he'd set aside for her.

He caught himself watching her as she went over his instructors, wondering to himself if she was all right. He knew he respected her for a reason and she had been handling the situation seemingly well, but even he could not forget what happened. Perhaps it was a mistake. Maybe she didn’t feel what he felt. All of these thoughts ran through his head when he looked at her.

He picked up his own computer and gestured towards his desk. Starfleet accommodations were limited, so they would have to share the space (which currently lacked an extra work space), but staying together amidst these thoughts was not wise.

“Cadet,” he was even avoiding saying her name… “we must share this space for now but you will eventually be given a work area. I… have business to attend to…”

In reality he was heading to the lab to immerse himself in calculations and programming. He nodded to her, stealing one last look at her before he headed to the door.

Two months had passed since her first day as Commander Spock's assistant. Since that time, she had become much more efficient with what he needed done and how quickly he needed it done. She often found it easy to anticipate his needs and wants and he could find assignments graded and tests looked over and organized before he could ask her to do it for him. His office, though cramped with the two of them, didn't seem as tiny as before. She kept it as immaculate as ever and he hadn't once had to speak to her about her performance as a teaching assistant.

Two months had also passed since that first evening where he had stayed with her in her room. The very next morning, she'd found herself slightly embarrassed and completely overwhelmed with emotions that she hadn't known she felt before then. She could read him in class easily and though she never once slacked on her work, she occasionally stole a kiss here or there in the lab, sometimes a quick brush of her hand against his as she was the last to leave his classroom. Uhura was very ( ... )

The time that had passed since he assigned her to the TA position had gone by so quickly. She was efficient, punctual and never let their relationship get in the way of their work. It was difficult for them to spend time together outside of the lab in the evenings or the occasional dinner or cup of coffee (admittedly one of his favorite things about Earth), but now and then if Uhura’s roommate was gone they could spend the whole night together ( ... )

Uhura was puzzled by his affectionate greeting. Not that he wasn't affectionate - he was. Just not usually quite so forward with his kisses in greetings and when he took the papers from her completely, she gave him a confused look mixed with a smile.

"Off, Commander?" She pushed her chair back and looked up at him for a moment before standing and running a hand lightly down his arm, her fingers threading through his. "If you insist, but I was almost finished. I have this boss that's an absolute animal when things don't get done the right way the first time."

Her tone was teasing, and she squeezed his hand gently before letting go and gathering her things. "What's the occasion?"

Uhura had snuck back to her room so late that even Gaila had made it back before her. She changed in the dark and slipped into bed in just a t-shirt and her underthings ( ... )

“The Phonological shifts experienced across system boundaries share a common…” He began the lecture at the usual time, and was surprised to see Uhura just settling in and preparing for class. The exchange between her and the other young man near her made him want to raise an eyebrow and possibly inquire, but he stayed focused on the lecture until the end of class.

As usual, students with questions and comments approached him when the lecture was finally concluded, but he kept becoming distracted (like so many others) by the dark marks that riddled his assistant’s body.

Once the last of the students left them alone, his features softened. It was almost as if in trying harder not to show the emotions he did feel he became even more emotionless. It was only when they were finally alone that he didn’t have to try as hard to keep up the facade ( ... )

"I'm fine, Professor." Her tone was bright, her smile brighter and the look she gave him would (to anyone else) have seemed innocent, as if she were just answering the question.

As they walked down the hall, she held her books tightly in front of her, her head ducked just enough to hide the mark on her neck as that was the one that she felt most self-conscious about. Not embarrassed, never that, but the one she felt others noticed most. And once he opened the office door and she stepped inside, she set her books down on his desk before turning to him and giving him a very serious look.

"I am fine, Spock." The second time she said it, her tone was softer, more sincere and with a deeper meaning. She wanted him to know that while she was achy and a bit sore, she didn't mind it in the least and certainly didn't regret anything. "I wouldn't change any of it, not even the looks I've been getting all day."

Once the door was shut behind him, she stepped forward and placed a soft kiss against his lips. "I promise."

Before he counter her response and argue the fact that the visibility of the marks was proof that there was pain involved her lips were already on his. The response wasn’t near as passionate than it had been on the previous night. He had never lost control like that before, and the delicate line between control and insanity was so thin when he was around her. That guard, that stoic and logical mind and temperament, was the only solace he had from his irrational fear of hurting her. One day he would have the balance and control (with practice, he hoped ( ... )
