Transcription errors = What are people learning these days?

I'm reading a transcript right now and the interviews are ok. It's the way they're typed that worries me.  Here are some examples:

exceed = excide
three = tree
without = with out
leaving = living
aesthetics = esthetics
a lot = alot
minamaliit = minamaliet
seryoso = siryoso

The first time I read such errors, I always think that they're just typos

people don't read books, so where are they supposed to pick up beautiful written language? our grandparents spoke and wrote well because to be educated back then you were expected to be well-read. i get appalled every single time i read inquirer.net or philstar.com because so many people who write for a living are incapable of putting sentences together. if you read a newspaper in singapore-where most people are bilingual just like we are-you'll be amazed at how crisp and precise their use english is, and saddened because we can't even begin to compete. chaka talaga!

that's true! i read an article by a malaysian and although it was bordering on O.A., his choice of words was very good and the way his sentences flowed made the article a passionately written one.

i will admit that i didn't read much of the classics myself (more of the textbooks because i was a bit of a science nerd that way) but now that i've kids, i'm doing my best to make sure that they have the best reading material. even just buying graphic novels for j's son has done wonders for him. he constructs sentences better and is learning to express himself with more confidence. it really makes a difference to read (or at least watch) good materials. :)
