We liked Source Code, too, and I think I'll add Spartan to the Netflix queue based on your review.

I loved Lost in Austen. I mean, it is such a goofy Mary Sue, but it's a lot of fun.

I'm about halfway through Lost in Austen and liking it a lot for what it is. (Fluffy and fun.)

re: Spartan ... I recommend not reading anything about it before you watch it! Go in (almost) blind.

I also really enjoyed Lost in Austen. And that's quite apart from the Dr. Who element: time/space travel, rooms that are not what they seem, River Song...I'm sure the Doctor was lurking somewhere!

Not a parent, and YMMV, but I would say Source Code is OK for a 12-year-old. It might get a little heavy at the end but it's well done.

Spartan might be too ... sparse ... is the word that comes to mind.

I think that both of those are too sophisticated for her, she quite enjoyed Detective Dee but mostly for the spectacle and the comedy.
