Brainslie and I had the same reaction to the movie Monster with Charlize Theron. There is a brutal rape scene about a quarter of the way through that (we felt) crossed the line into gratuitous. Personally, I feel that, as a director, there's a responsibility to use restraint when portraying sexual violence. There is a line between 'shocking' and 'harrowing' that I would like to see respected more.
