Oh, I like this. I like it very much.

There is something almost deliberately vague in canon. He merely tells her that he'll 'have just enough residual awareness to let [her] in' but it's never explained properly. I really like the way you've dealt with it - and your John Smith voice is spot on.

And thanks also for letting me know I've got his voice right. I actually had him speaking much more stiltedly than this in the first draft... then I went back and watched a few of the scenes from it, and realised that it was just all *wrong*, and I edited all the lines I'd given him and put in a few contractions. I still wasn't sure I had it totally right now, but it sounds from your and unfeathered's comments as though I managed it, so thank you so much for confirming that :-)
