What do you normally use while blocking? I notice you use a lot of T-pins, but what do you use at the base?

Previously, I used some extra foam I had left over from Lowe's (anything you can stick pins in, really). This holiday, my mother gave me a blocking board, which is much nicer since it has measured grid marked on it and it folds up for storage.

Also, this is just for when blocking lace. Most other items (scarves, sweaters, etc.), I just lay flat on a towel on the floor and nudge into the shape I want.

Some of the lace patterns are really simple to do and yield very complicated results. Feather and Fan is one of these. The Vine Lace pattern I used for the green shawl is another simple design. You could even take some scrap wool yarn and knit up a swatch just to try it out. :)
