I'm kind of remembering this Piers Anthony (I think?) book where the main character falls for a demon who has two forms - a male and a female one, and hence has two mates. And first she and the other mate (the dude) treat each other like "the other woman". It's interesting because later they get stuck in a situation where they are forced into close proximity for a while (they're stuck somewhere awaiting rescue, or something) and almost end up falling for each other, except for the clause in their mate-bonds with their mate that if they think of each other romantically the mate dies horribly.

It was an interesting read.
