Gibbs sighed as the younger man stormed out of the room. Much as Tony's childish humor and behavior irked him at times he much preferred the kid in a candy store to the somewhat volatile agent he'd had on his hands over the past couple of hours. Maybe he shouldn't have interfered but he cared about the younger man and had Tony's best interests at heart. He knew from personal experience that getting involved with a fellow agent didn't tend to turn out well and only wanted to spare Tony the heartache he knew would follow if it turned out that Cassidy was involved in their current case.
"It's cooling down out there now, I think I'll take a walk, it's far too hot and stuffy in here." Kate walked back out into the main room, wandering over to the fridge and grabbing a bottle of water on her way to the door.
"Ok, don't be too late; we need to get an early start in the morning." Gibbs responded without looking up.
As Kate disappeared into the night Gibbs gave up all pretenses that he was working, instead he was mulling over his senior field agent's behavior. Tony had only known Paula Cassidy a day, yet he hadn't missed the shocked and dismayed look Tony had given him when he'd ordered him to search her apartment, or the soft apology he had given the woman as he'd walked past her. Tony had obviously fallen hard. He'd thought it amusing earlier but now he realized that maybe he'd pushed the younger man too far, it didn't happen very often, he knew Tony's boundaries well enough by now that he usually knew just how far he could go.
Glancing at the clock he stood, decision made, knowing that he had to make his peace with the younger man. He was only too aware that his young agent was prone to nightmares when something had upset him and knew Tony wouldn't want to have Kate witness one of his episodes, especially not after the morning's embarrassment of waking up naked to find that not only had he been sharing his bed with an iguana but that he was also putting one hell of a show for his team mates.
"Tony?" He tapped gently on the bedroom door, waiting to see whether the younger agent was asleep.
"Yeah, I'm still awake, you can come in." The response came hesitantly, the voice resigned with all traces of anger gone. Gibbs opened the door and stepped into the room. Tony rolled over so he was lying on the far side of the bed, propped up on one arm. His eyes met Gibbs briefly before he dropped them to stare at his free hand which was picking nervously at the edge of the sheet.
Gibbs walked into the room, closing the door behind him just in case Kate came back before they were done; he knew that Tony wouldn't thank him if she were to overhear their conversation.
"I'm sorry Boss. It was childish, I know I over-reacted." Tony broke off with a sigh before finally looking up at Gibbs.
"You really like her don't you?" Gibbs asked gently, sitting on the side of the bed where Tony had unconsciously made room for him. This wasn't the first time the two had had a bedtime chat.
"Yeah I do Boss." Tony blushed a little and looked down again, unable to hold the penetrating blue gaze watching him so knowingly. "There was an immediate attraction there but she was playing hard to get, I was just beginning to think I was getting somewhere with her when you called." He broke off, unwilling to go any further.
"I ruined your chance to get laid." Gibbs quoted Cassidy with a slight chuckle.
Tony gave him a wry grin. "Did Paula tell you that?"
"Yeah, I guess you were in with a chance after all." He replied lightly before turning serious again. "Tony, you know the reason why relationships between agents are discouraged, especially in situations like this. It isn't against regulations if the other person isn't in the same chain of command but I just didn't want to see you get distracted, compromised or hurt while we're still investigating the case, especially if it turns out that Cassidy is involved somehow."
Tony looked deeply into the older man's eyes, seeing only concern and sincerity there. Gibbs' was known to a lot of people as being a bastard, even owned up to it willingly, but Tony knew that when it came down to it the senior agent cared about all his people. Tony had been on the end of that caring on enough occasions now in his two years with Gibbs to know that his team leader was only looking out for his best interests.
"Was that an apology Boss?" Tony's eyes twinkled with fun as he teased the older man and Gibbs was relieved to see the spark back in his agent's eyes. He wasn't surprised that the younger man wasn't arguing with him, Tony was a good agent and Gibbs knew he understood.
"Get some sleep; we need to get an early start in the morning." He reached over and Tony braced himself for a headslap that didn't come. Instead he felt Gibbs hand ruffle softly through his hair, it was an affectionate gesture and didn't happen often but Tony treasured it every time.
He yawned as he flopped back down on his pillow, feeling sleepy now that the anxiety of the earlier confrontation was released. He always hated being at odds with the older man, feeling the same emotions he'd felt as a child trying so hard to please his father, somehow it seemed worse when it was Gibbs and Tony didn't know whether it was because he was now older and not supposed to feel those childish emotions or because he knew that, unlike his father, it was possible to please Gibbs, he knew that the older man did respect him and was often proud of him, which made it all the worse when he felt that he'd disappointed him.
Gibbs pulled the covers back over him with a gentle smile before turning to leave the room. "Night Tony, sleep tight and don't let the iguana's bite." He tossed the words over his shoulder at his sleepy agent on his way out, but wasn't quite quick enough to avoid the pillow that followed his exit; he returned it in style, both men now laughing openly.
He finally closed the door with a look of satisfaction on his face. Mission accomplished!
