Yuletide 2013: Who knew?

Jan 02, 2014 18:20

For a variety of reasons, I didn't sign up for Yuletide at AO3 this year, which was partly a little sad and partly a relief to not have the ZOMG ANGST PRESSURE, especially since I've been in a writing funk for the past few months and really lost all the feels (and if you know me, you know feels are EVERYTHING), and I was desperately worried that I ( Read more... )

I really adored my story, and on the topic of the origins of Sleeping Beauty, have you ever had a chance to read the Charles Perrault version?

It's on gutenberg. It's very sweet, without the consent issues, and it keeps going after she wakes up.

Thanks! The prompt and the artwork were both very inspiring - I used the non-Ripushko illustrations a lot as well for Philippa's outfits and some of the scenes, it was so fun! In fact, when I was doing my research into where the whole prince charming thing came from, I discovered the phrasing was actually Perrault's! (Hence the quote at the beginning) And it was really interesting how in his version, as you say, he doesn't kiss the princess, she just wakes up on her own when he walks in. (I also laughed at the part where they get married and Perrault comes out and says "She got very little sleep"). And then there's the little matter of the grandmother wanting to eat their babies...oh the good old days before Disney :P.

*FACEPALM*

I can't believe I forgot that was there! I'm sorry! Oh man. I got all excited about doing a version rec and forgot.

I like the bit where everyone gets mad at them for talking so much that everyone has to wait on eating.

The mom thing is interesting, 'cause even with the 'oh man, she'll eat my kids' he loves her anyway.

Anyway. *covers face* I'm sorry. I totally can't believe I forgot that the opening was Perrault.

I really liked your Phillipa. And your Aurin seemed so sweet. It was a little confusing there was a comment about how he wouldn't hesitate to take advantage of Phillipa in her place? Which was so odd to see, especially since in the Disney version they're explicitly in love before and told that's the only way to save her. I've been puzzling if I missed something in your story.

LOL no worries, I liked Perrault's version too! It was quite different than some of the others and maybe even like he blended the ogress mother from another tale into that one, but that's speculation on my part :P. (I too picked up on how everyone seems remarkably okay with the queen who casually eats babies for breakfast.)

Thanks very much. Aurin was written as naive and sheltered, a very romantic soul. I guess I missed something in my story too because I didn't write him as being a taking-advantage kind of person. Maybe having been so sheltered he wouldn't be QUITE up on proper social interactions as Philippa raised in court is, but still essentially a good guy. I purposely tweaked the Disney version based on an idea from rewatching the movie, when the fairies are so alarmed at Aurora meeting a strange man in the woods (rightly so), and I thought, hmm, what if that was Maleficent trying to trap her?

I was very much tempted to do genderbent Tangled too...Eugene would make a very dashing girl...

Ooooh! Happy Persuasion fic! Wow you did well with the understated Austeny sexiness.

Hahaha thank you...I thought Austen, if she were writing today, might well have done a winky little fade to black and the trick of dialogue that conveys what's going on. It was actually quite fun to try to imagine how she would do it and not use any naughty words ;).

Go you! And Persuasion is a canon I know somewhat, so I am definitely going to have to read that.

Vesper Holly was nominated this year but no fic happened (I requested, didn't match . . . looks like nobody matched on her this year) so we DEFINITELY need her in again next year!

I may or may not have my letter drafted already, just because there's always that one canon I knew I wanted to nominate but I forget at the last minute . . .

So glad you had fun this year, and I am looking forward to reading :)
