a conversation had in the wal mart offices:

'i just saw minority report last night.'
'yeah.'
'i liked it and decided to make it a reality.'
'ok. hopefully this is a better idea than when you tried to make grease 2 a reality.'
'praise christmas and godspeed.'

I've heard it said that the Wal-Mart in-store content is the single most-viewed broadcast network in the US, as judged by people watching per day.

That was quick. I wonder how that exposure affects large scale campaigns.

It's certainly interesting context for news items like the fact that Wal-Mart recently announced financials that were far short of anticipation, directly citing the rising price of gas as the primary cause. Imagine what happens if Wal-Mart, at the executive level, decides the current Republican agenda-- as personified in the current administration-- is messing with petroleum pricing for its own profits, and decides it's time for regime change? They have a captive audience who-- let's face it-- is largely susceptible to the mass-market message.

What if Wal-Mart decided to depose a president?

Theoretically at least much of the content is considered 'news'(news about products, etc.), but for many years it has been difficult for me to discern reporting from commercials, even in programs explicitly labeled as news.

You're probably right that it's only a matter of time until these ubiquitous multimedia displays begin carrying less overtly product-oriented content. Perhaps even licensed... In the last few years many gas stations have installed little televisions in their gas pumps. Rather than displaying only commercials for products to be found inside, these usually just stream network tv.
