I had only the best of intentions. At least that was what I told myself later.

Everyone else was enjoying themselves at the holiday party, but I was having a miserable time. I wanted nothing better than to go back to my quarters for a private party of one. That was when I noticed her.

She was just standing all by herself in the corner. God, she was beautiful. She had the loveliest blonde hair I had ever seen, so soft and wavy. I have a thing for blondes, so I couldn't resist the opportunity to go over and try my luck.

Coming closer, I realized the object of my interest was none other than Laura Cadman. I hadn't even recognized her. She could have been anybody. The irony was not lost on me. We'd locked horns so many times. We couldn't get far enough away from each other when someone suggested mistletoe.

But I still wanted to go over there anyway. I didn't think twice about it. If anything, I was more determined to see this through. I wasn't seeing her as Cadman tonight, just Laura. Selfishly, I wanted to put that radiant smile on her face tonight. Even if my actions just made her furious with me, I thought that was a fair tradeoff, since she was just as pretty when she was mad.

"Cadman, there you are," I began, "I was hoping I would see you." Not the clumsiest opening in my dating career, but pretty close to it. Hopefully she'd give me the chance to say the rest of what I wanted to say.

"You were looking for me?" I couldn't really blame her for sounding skeptical. "I'm really not up to your games tonight, Rodney."

"I'm not up to anything!" I said defensively. "I... just... wanted to tell me how pretty you look tonight." I sounded so incredibly stupid. Like she hadn't heard that line a million times. Laura still blushed, so I must not have sounded too bad after all. "Your hair looks especially nice." I continued bravely. "Happy Christmas, Cadman." Then I did something that wasn't part of my plan. I leaned down and kissed her softly on the mouth. Where had that come from? I still don't know what possessed me. I just remember wishing I hadn't pulled away so soon.

Laura just stared at me in dumbfounded shock. Finally she said, "Merry Christmas, Rodney." Was she amused? Was she going to hurt me?

Deciding discretion was the better part of my valor, I backed out into the hallway, hoping to avoid bodily harm. Laura damn near tackled me. Then all I remember was her pushing me up against the wall and kissing me! That wasn't the response I expected. Her mouth covered mine for the longest of time. I remember wrapping my arms around her and pulling her even closer until neither of us could breathe.

That private party was a lot more interesting later. Who needs mistletoe anyway?
