What are we afraid of?

On Tuesday we discussed whether or not writing was art, and how much of ourselves writers should put into their work. i don't know art but i know what i like, i love readers, what do you think, writing thoughts, in which i open up in an afterschool spe, i am serious

What a fascinating post. I haven't experienced a lot of that flack yet because I'm just beginning my career. However, I do think it is interesting to note the double standard exists in the industry ( ... )

Painters can have gallery shows that they are emotionally detached from, though. I know quite a few working artists, and many of them make "art" and then "stuff that will pay the bills" (i.e. cater to the market of what's selling right now). You might even call it "commercial art". I also know artists who, once they've finished a piece, are more than ready to get it out of their sight, because they've moved on from that emotional place that set them to working on it. I know writers who are the same way. So, with that said, I don't see why genre writing (or any writing) can't be seen as art.
