I get very uncomfortable when reviews attack the writer personally. Disliking the writing is one thing, but you sometimes see reviews go for the author in a very personal way, which is just horrible and unnecessary.

I've been lucky - only one negative review so far, for Afterlife, my debut novel. And I admit I haven't read it because I know myself too well, lol. I'd obsess and obsess over it, convince myself I'm the worst writer in the world, throw my laptop out the window and decide to go be a goatherder or something.

Oh - I should add I've given out my own share of snarky reviews for certain books in the past, but I've always tried to steer clear of aiming the snark at the author as an individual, and focus on why I disliked the book.

that is over the top, attacking the writer. Does this happen a lot? Do you mean attacking the writer as a person or writer? Most of the time, if I don't like a book, I try not to say very much about it on my blog, or I just say i couldn't finish it, because it just wasn't for me.

I don't see the necessity of personal attacks on writers.
