Those gross tv chefs

So a discussion began last night, on a forum of which I am a member, about the rinsing of raw meats before cooking, specifically poultry. Some rinse, some don’t. Another member commented that apparently the FDA recommends against rinsing. You know why?

Because the water can splash and land on other things, thus spreading bacteria.

I had to laugh. I ( Read more... )

Wow, that is thorough. I knew there was a reason I don't eat meat;D.

I like to watch cooking shows sometimes and I don't remember ever seeing them wash their hands while preparing food. Or mentioning how dangerous bacteria are. Hm...

I find the bleach/rinse thing a bit freaky, but otherwise with you all the way. My wife, though, tells me to man up and stop whining about salmonella all the time. Sometimes she scares me.

Oh. Wow. I, uh... Just wow.

It's never ocurred to me to wash raw chicken. I wash my hands and utensils after touching it, but I don't think usually wash the faucet. Back home, though, I can turn on and off the water with my elbow. I do wash the spigots here, since they're twisties (HATE twisty spigots in the kitchen BTW).

After reading what you do, I'm kind of wondering how I'm still alive.

I don't wash my hands prior to cooking. I only wash afterwards if I have gooey stuff on them.

Don't really have a point. I am healthy and so is my family.

I'm late to this post, but YES! This also bugs me. I've noticed the chefs wiping their hands on what appears to be a dry towel, with no washing, certainly no soap. It's sad that while I'm pretty sure that a lot of the food (especially the prepared food) was done right, that maybe time issues force them to skip steps in the "pretending' they're cooking bits - most people just accept what they see.

I also pay attention to bathroom scenes and it grosses me out when they show stall users come out, look in the mirror, mess with their hair or LIPSTICK (ugh, they just touched their private areas!) and then walk out the door with no handwashing. Even worse is sit in a stall in a busy bathroom and you'll notice that about 40 % of toilet users do not wash their hands. Some of the ones that do use the sink, don't actually use the soap. People are gross. I taught all of my children to wash their hands after the toilet (though one of my boys is pretty stubborn about it) and now I'm helping to teach my grandchildren the same things.
