Am I an emotional cripple?

(Wow, it feels odd to not be blogging about publishing on a Friday, it's been so long! The summer series is over; no more interviews, no more posts. I'm sure I'll keep blogging about it on occsion, we're just not doing it regularly anymore ( Read more... )

The gist of it was, if a man is in a very low, unhappy place emotionally, is it taking advantage of him for the heroine to, ah, take a tip from Marvin Gaye?

My problem with this is that it assumes that characters, especially main characters, should do the right thing. Always. 'nuff said. If I were to say what I really thought, I'd be using four-letter words and insulting people, whom I think deserve it.

I always thought the ultimate taboo of taboos was rape though.

By the way, aren't you in the UK? (I'm asking because I'm moving there tomorrow.)

That's an excellent point, too--it's no fun if they never do anything wrong, or make mistakes, or think unkind thoughts (I actually blogged about that some time ago, come to think of it.)

WHY are you moving here?!!???!?

Yes, I live in Devon.

True, rape is worse. I wasn't thinking.

Yeah, I think you did.

Rape's on my mind because I'm about to go back to another WIP where the female protag is/was/will be raped (I'm not writing it in order, so all three apply, LOL).

I'm going to study economics at the University of Manchester.

If you'd be willing to autograph for me a copy of Personal Demons in person, I can travel on vacations!

Of course I will. Shame Manchester is as far as it is--too long a drive with little ones, unfortunately.

Hope you made it here safely!

I think it does depend on how you write the scene......... dracschick September 8 2007, 02:23:34 UTC
without context, it's difficult to argue either way because I can see the scene working (or not).

Oh I agree, and if the writer wasn't comfortable with the scene it's better for her not to write it. It just wasn't a concern that ever would have occurred to me.
