American Gods: Neil Gaiman, The Horseman Trilogy (Run With the Horseman, The Whisper of the River, When All the World Was Young), The Baker's Boy trilogy: J.V. Jones, Water For Elephants: Sarah Gruen, most everything by Nancy Springer, Diana Gabaldon, Carl Hiaasen, Owen Parry and Richard Russo. And in the hard-to-read-but-glad-I-did category, The Kite Runner: Khaled Hosseini
To see for yourself how eclectic my reading habits are, have a look at my LibraryThing inventory. All books I own and plan to keep... Waaayyy too many...;-) http://www.librarything.com/catalog/debikm
I totally agree about Carrie Ryan's Forest of Hands and Teeth. Scary and awesome! Also I loved Cherie Priest's Dreadful Skin. Historical, scary and so wonderfully well written..
BONESHAKER by Cherie Priest is a *fantastic* steampunk fantasy that'll be out in November (I got a sneak peek because I Know People :P.) If you have the slightest interest in steampunk, historical fantasy or chilling gothic horror, you gotta check it out.
I tend to buy a lot of books online (where I can usually get them cheaper than retail) so I actually like it when I can see what other people have purchased, or have recommended (like Amazon's Listmania). Buying online also tends to limit the amound of $$ I spend too. Short list of recent books I've read I'd recommend: Angel's Blood - Nalini Singh Magic Strikes - Ilona Andrews Deadly Desire - Keri Arthur Promises in Death - J. D. Robb (aka Nora Roberts) City of Glass - Cassandra Clare Stuff I haven't read yet I'd recommend: The Forest of Hands and Teeth - Carrie Ryan The Graveyard Book - Neil Gaiman Blue Diablo - Ann Aguirre Turn Coat - Jim Butcher
I really like "Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell" by Susanna Clarke. And all books by John Ajvide Lindqvist are amazing, for example "Let me in (Let the right one in)" and "Handling the undead".
