First, I haven't read the Meyer books, but I think you've got it right that this is one person's opinion. Considering the source, I would lend it more credence than one given by Joe Reader on the street; he has written a ton of best-selling books for a heck of a long time. The public won't settle for something that doesn't offer a good story.
And he does seem to give credit to story telling, right? People for the most part want to be entertained once you get outside the literary circles where most criticism seems to be a circle jerk.
Second, my youngest daughter loved the Twilight movie and gobbled up the first book. On that point alone I'll let her slide, whether she's a "good" writer or not. If you get someone reading, you've done a good thing. If anything, more people are going to read her books so they can offer their own 2 cents.
Last, anyone who read and liked Meyer's books and liked King's books is probably smart enough to see that we're talking apples and oranges here. One doesn't preclude the other.
I was actually quite amused when I read his comments....and I did enjoy reading Stephenie Meyer's story most of the time. No, they're not very well written and I wanted to cut out half the story, but I like that type of story more than I like most of Stephen's and he is by far the better writer!
It's sad that people are having tantrums over his comment. Hopefully she'll learn from the critiques and improve her craft because she does have a very interesting imagination. (I really wanted to smack her main character though. LOL!)
Everyone has the right to their opinion - including Stephen King. One comment I read online in the "jealous" vein said something about how many books Meyer has sold and that hers were being made into movies. I actually laughed out loud. I think a lot of the people saying those things haven't a clue who Stephen King is, but that's just my opinion
( ... )
That's the first positive thing I've heard about the way the media hyped that. Well thought! Here I was thinking it was another case of ridiculous celebrity gossip, but if we can use it to get people into bookstores, I'll take it!
I'm really surprised that it has gotten as much press as it has and that people are so polarized on the subject. My personal feeling--and this is just me--is that I wouldn't necessarily say something against an author or aspiring author. Having said that, it it is not as if it is an isolated incident in the publishing industry either.
