I don't stretch before - I stretch after. I do warm-up though. I was under the assumption that you don't stretch when the muscles are cold? I dunno...that's how I've always heard/done it.
Shin splints are on the front of the leg, right? Or can they be around the back? It's literally right above my heel and goes about 4-6 inches up. It stops before the calf.
You're not supposed to stretch when the muscles are cold, that's true, but usually if you're going for a longer run, you should do a bit of a jog or something first, and THEN stretch, once your muscles are a little warmer.
