Totally true. I played up the creepy for fun, but they actually seem to be pretty nice spirits. I even think they stopped with the lights because I...um...kind of talked to them and told them it was upsetting me. My husband believes it was his electrical skills, but I beg to differ.
A lot of people like to burn sage to clear a new house. Or have a pastor or priest over just to bless it as a new home.
The lights, I'd be willing to say is a natural phenomena. If your husband can disable it, and it stops when it's disabled, I'd call in an electrician for that.
Ghosts really don't care if things are live wired or not. One of my mom's friends had a ghost who liked to set off the smoke detector. And would set it off, even if it was laying on the kitchen table, disconnected.
As for the singing... as long as your kids aren't afraid and nobody's being hurt- I'd say be friendly, and enjoy it as an odd, if ethereal, perk to your new home.
I've heard of using a smug/sage stick. I actually did that once before when my boyfriend was living in a house that creeped him out.
But you're right. These ghosts don't seem mean. And, like I told Kate, I actually did ask them to stop with the lights. (I was in tears after a few nights of it, and just...started talking to them. I was a little afraid to admit that in my blog post for fear of showing Mah Crazy.) But maybe they heard me and decided to stick to singing instead?
Hugs, thanks for sharing the smoke detector story!
check your wiring!terryminerSeptember 30 2010, 20:11:41 UTC
i am not a sceptic, just a pyrophobe. have your house's wiring checked before you wake up to a fire!!! honestly, i am more afraid of fire than of ghosts. you can't make friends with a fire... you can make friends with ghosts, talking with them is the sane response. see if they answer back! usually they don't, but they'll change their behavior if they like the way you take care of the house... i have dispelled unruly, not-quite-human ghosts by invoking the name of jesus. i'm not kidding. in extremis, it works! i'm not sure why.... then there are evil spirits who just want you gone. if those are in your house, my advice is to not be in that house. right away! sounds like you may have the would like to be friends type ghosts. talk with them, i'd like to hear what your interaction is like...

Part of me is horrified and sympathetic ... part of me wants to steal the details and write a book!
