It's quiet. For days their quarters have been a flurry of activity and
action. Slowly, he finds himself righting objects accidentally tumbled
in a little girl's wake. Always there was an apology and bright
curious eyes asking what the object was, particularly if it were
Vulcan in origin. Joanna had returned to Earth being able to count in
both High Vulcan and Golic. She can say hello, good morning, and can
now do the traditional salute. The salute itself had been difficult
but she had been extremely determined forcing her fingers wide then
concentrating intensely. As Spock finds a hair ribbon tucked into the
cushion of a chair he feels an ache within him that he cannot
describe.
Leonard smiles less the few days after Joanna leaves. He is as quiet
as their quarters and Spock finds himself lost in his mate's emotions.
For the first time in his life, Spock feels like a childless father
keenly sensing the absence of a child that is not biologically his.
One night, after the evening meal, Spock places his hand on Leonard's
shoulder and speaks softly. "I miss Joanna also, Leonard."
Leonard's eyes shine as he looks up at Spock, but he covers his
husband's hand with his own. Gratitude and sympathy fill Spock
conveyed by Leonard's touch.
"She's something isn't she?"
They spend the evening discussing, for the first time since Joanna has
left the Enterprise, the little girl's adventures aboard the ship.
Including her reactions to Spock and her almost instantaneous love for
him.
"Never seen her like that with anyone. She's never been much on new people."
"Perhaps she sensed my affections for you and understood that because
she is your child they also in part extend to her."
"You don't love Jo, just cause she's mine?"
"She reminds me greatly of you. Even if we were not romantically
involved I believe I would be 'charmed' by her."
Leonard laughs remembering how Jo charmed the rest of the crew with
her big eyes and her southern drawl, but she'd stuck close to him and
then to Spock. Watching her desperately hug the normally stiff Vulcan
had almost brought tears to Leonard's eyes in the transporter room.
"I believe that we should make an effort after the cessation of our
mission to achieve a more equitable custody arrangement between you
and Joanna's mother."
Leonard gives his husband a sharp look.
"Are you saying what I think you're saying?"
"We have not discussed our future endeavors after the conclusion of
the initial five year mission."
"I figured you want your own ship or to head to the Vulcan colony."
"I would not undertake either of those tasks without you. Unless you
have already foreseen our union ending before then."
"You're not getting rid of me that easily, you green blooded bastard."
"You persist on using that term though you are aware that my parents
were fully bonded before my birth." The curve of Spock's lips suggests
a smile and Leonard leans across the to kiss his mate.
"You're stuck with me, Spock."
"I find that is not a distressing thought. However, I believe we
should consider opportunities in the future that would allow us
greater interaction with Joanna. Perhaps even allowing her to live
with us."
"You'd do that for me?"
Spock's fingers stroke Leonard's cheek then up to his temple. "No
Leonard, I would do that for us. I feel her absence also. "
Leonard McCoy sighs allowing himself to lean against his husband.
"Jim will be pissed if we don't sign on for a second tour."
"Captain Kirk will have to learn eventually that the universe does not
always comply with his wishes."
McCoy does laugh now, a deep rich sound filling their quarters and
warming something inside Spock.
"You're right. Jim does need to learn that."

3.5 Standard Years later
Joanna cannot find her PADD. The logical inquiry is to ask where she
had it last, however all that gains Spock is a raised eyebrow
remarkably similar to Joanna's father and comment that if she could
remember that she could find her PADD. The words are not said with
malice but with the deep sarcasm that seems to be a McCoy genetic
trait. Spock examines the living area including the small corner chair
that is Joanna's favorite place to read. Her PADD is tucked between
the back cushions of the chair. Powering it on to make sure the
machine is not damaged, Spock sees a holo image of Leonard, Joanna,
and himself taken upon her first visit to the Enterprise.
"You found it." Joanna's still small hands take the PADD. When she
realizes that it has been turned on she looks up at Spock with a
smile.
"We have more recent images if you wish to update that one." The words
are difficult to get out because of an obstruction in Spock's throat.
Joanna shakes her head making her long ponytail bounce. Spock has
become quite adept at assisting her in pulling her hair back and in
braiding it. It is a necessity as Leonard, though a skilled surgeon,
has proven himself inefficient at styling his daughter's hair.
"This one's my favorite." She raises up on her toes and Spock
understands that this is a signal for him to bend down so he can
receive a kiss on the cheek. As Joanna gathers the rest of her things
to catch school shuttle she flashes the V sign and smiles at her step
father. Automatically, Spock responds with the gesture then watches as
she escapes out the door. He spends a few moments before righting
objects overturned in the young girl's wake.
"Hurricane Jo make the shuttle?" Leonard's voice is still thick with
sleep. He stands in the doorway still dressed in his sleep clothes.
"I believe the phrase is 'just in the nick of time'."
"Thank God, we've got you to keep us on schedule." Leonard beckons his
husband closer pressing a kiss to the Vulcan's mouth. Spock tastes the
contrasting flavors of mint and dark coffee and searches deeper for
Leonard's own taste.
Spock touches his fingers to Leonard's and allows contentment to wash over him.
