Huzzah! Maybe there needs to be encouragement through some sort of reward/punishment system related to me not reading stories unless the floor is clean enough for me to walk through or sit on the floor...

That would be a very helpful idea! Clean enough for you to sit comfortably. Prefer that he has his stuff in his boxes and put away properly. We have a good chunk of his things in various boxes, in homes for the boxes, too.

This post makes me think maybe you could give me some advice. My best girlfriend is a manic shopper and pack rat and her kids' bedrooms are so messy that you literally cannot see the floor. They have so many toys they cover the floor and go into piles 2-3 feet tall in the corners, plus under the bed. I would love to clean their rooms, buy some storage, and (I know this might be the touchiest part) purge some items. I know that this is a VERY touchy subject to bring up. The kids have complained about losing toys and my friend has said multiple times that she hates how messy their rooms are, but she suffers from depression and just doesn't have the energy. She just gets on the kids to clean their rooms, but with so many things and no storage system they don't have any hope of doing so. In the past she has welcomed my help cleaning bathrooms & doing laundry. I'm scared to but in about the kids though because I know they may be unhappy with what I do which might lead to trouble with me and my friend ( ... )

Ok, you are right, it can be a touchy subject. I know I can get upset when people mention my messy home, but... that's because I know they are right. I also understand how depressing it can be to even start, because it just seems so very daunting, and you don't know where to even begin, so why bother when it will just get messy again in one day ( ... )
