The Economics of Skinny Models.

Relatively short article, but this section is what caught my eye.
"So then why do we keep seeing such delicately thin young girls model clothes meant to be sold to women with mature figures? One little addressed reason may have to do with the manufacturing process: it's cheaper and easier to mass manufacture clothes ( Read more... )

I went to a sewing conference in DFW earlier this year and the woman giving the class that I went to about tailoring your own clothes was saying just that.
She was good. She was selling her cd's on how to do it yourself for the cost of what a nice outfit would be at Macy's.

Would that woman be Connie Amadon Crawford by any chance? Or do you remember the woman's name?

Nope it was Cynthia Guffey http://www.cynthiaguffey.com/

I got a couple of her CD's on hand sewing and have yet had the time to look at them. It has nearly been a year since I went to the clinic .. sigh .. I am doomed something I think ...

No, not doomed. Thanks for sharing that link. Her series looks very complete. Oh, and I see she understands the need for a good pressing board, as she sells one that I've not seen on the market in years.

This is (very slowly) changing. At Fashion week in NYC the models were bigger than last year. Yes, 2's and 4's are still really thin but I actually know people that are size 4's naturally.

I saw the photos, and to me, they are still very thin, and not the curves real women are. Even "plus-sized" models are thinner than the women they are posing for in plus-sized catalogs, tho at least they do have more curves, and look more like "regular" women today.

I hear you. And it would be nice to find less wools and cottons with that darn lycra in it, but it seems to be going into every fabric I see in the stores, or online. My hard part is trying to figure out what style to work on making, as t-shirts and jeans have been my staple for a very long time.
