Unfortunately, some of those investors loosing money are people like me who have 401Ks that may include shares in Lehman and others.

Most likely so, but your shares would be small vs most major investors. And from what I am reading, retirement investments would have been shuffled out of Lehman's during the past few months, when the values started going, and the news was clear that there were problems, hence the lower share values before it tanked completely.
