It's dead, Jim.

Too bad I don't know what Dead Spaniard really looks like, because this semi-green but blue, with some odd yellowish overtones really is ugly, for a silk especially.

Maybe it will look better in the daylight, but it is not anywhere near the color the test sample came out looking, which was a nice deep green.

So, what do I do with it now? {sigh}

re-dye? maybe increase the yield of the dye to get the deep color you wanted?

I've tried redyeing at a double dye bath, and it isn't getting any deeper in color, just odder in color. It's a blue-green, which according to a recent color of Elizabeth's gifts article, could be between a watchet blue, and a sea-green, both of which are period. So, I think I will just keep it and see what comes of the garment with trims and all.

Next time, I will start with fabric the right color.

Either way, it sounds like a pretty color to me. :-)

I am tired of dyeing. It isn't getting any deeper, just odder.

BTW, the ladies at Fiber Arts Guild are asking about their photographer's background. I told them it really wasn't theirs (it was my old bed sheet, so technically it is mine still), and that I thought it was in the library. They can't seem to find it.

The Guild is prepping for this year's Fashion Show.

Please let them know where it can be found.

Idle pointless thought: I wonder how many folk of the lower upper classes ended up wearing garb of "ugly" colors from failed dye lots?

I am thinking lots of people. That's why some blacks were cheaper than others, according to Jane and Ninya, as those were not "true" blacks, but imperfect blacks.

Get more dye and redye it!! ladyaubergine April 9 2008, 22:18:56 UTC
Try the dharma stuff if you have not already, I killed some silk twill a couple years ago I wanted baby lilac I got?? Strange blue, so then when I was buying from Dharma I saw a teal and well purchased some and tried again with my bathtub, and it came out very well. Son now has a grand outfit.

So it is NOT lost, it is not dead, IT IS ALIVE Muwahhhhh!

I started with a Jacquard Sapphire Blue bought from Dharma. It was a weak blue. So, I used a Royal blue with a little Violet, and doubled the recipe. It got a little more blue with a hint of red, but not any stronger in color. So I tested the swatch and found stuff remaining in my bleach bath, so I think maybe it isn't 100% silk, but maybe has rayon in it, too. So I use a Rit on swatches, they come out darker and looking like a nice emerald green. Thinking it will work, I dye the whole thing in Rit Kelly Green. It just added a little green to the mostly blue, making it a blue-green of a medium shade. So, sea green it is, or maybe watchet blue... but not in any good deep shade, which is what I was trying for. I think it is the fabric that is not wanting any darker shade.

My trim will look okay on it, no big contrast as I prefer, but pleasant to look at. With some black velvet perhaps for a stronger edge contrast, it might work out alright. I will bring what I have to CC26, tho I doubt it will be finished by then.
