BTW - There are a number of 'saints images' of various 16th C dates in Germany where the lady in question is wearing some sort of 'foreshortened skirt attached to the bodice of her dress'. Honestly, this has always appeared to be some sort of mocked demi-Roman cuirass to me: Something like, "This looks like what people wore in the olden days and so it will make the subject of my painting appear to be from the olden days too". I haven't encountered any 'real life' use of the same type of garment at that short length in Germany - but I am finding new stuff all the time so who knows?
I've seen those styles (if it is what I think you are speaking of) in other nationalities, too. Some I think are "ancient" styles, but one was on a Queen in a genealogy tree in an illumination. I've seen them on other "regular" people I think, (one was a dancer) but am not positive. So, who knows if they were real or not.
My only question would be: If the Queen's image was a part of a genealogy tree - how far back from the time of the painting was her branch? Maybe the same issue of 'making it look old' was going on?
