Kearney Faire costuming comments.

Ah, there was much I forgot in yesterday's post, including seeing Sam the piper and chatting a bit with him about an Italian costuming book that rwfranz has talked to him about. Sam thinks that I should write the intro to the book for some reason. While I am flattered he likes my writing and knowledge of costuming, I am no where near that league of ( Read more... )

Thanks for clarifying the "newness" of the St. Sebastian members, that I didn't know about. I shall indeed try to look the other way for a time with the archers. I know how difficult it can be to improve costuming for any group, even an old one like mine. But in some ways, starting now with good basic costuming requirements might help in the long run. And it makes me wonder if they should re-invent themselves in the style of St. Murphy's?

But I am scratching my head on a number of belly dancing belts around the faire site on non-belly dancers. And then the belly dancers are showing a lot of skin compared to the Ottoman Traders (and historical style). Not to mention pirates of the 17th/18th centuries. But Joyce is open to a variety of entertainments, and is pretty relaxed on any rules, so we go with the flow, and I scratch my head in amusement and wonder.

I think the belly dancer belts is something related to Pirates of the Caribbean. Capt. Jack Sparrow wore something similar, I believe.

I didn't catch you at the beginning of your dressing, so I don't know.... Do you wear a petticoat under your hoops? That might help with the warmth issue, and is something I have to do if I go back to a farthingale. I've already got my red wool flannel.

What Sam suggested was that instead of simply trying to reprint a book on Italian costuming (which is something I've been thinking about and pushing toward at least getting somebody to do), that I write a new one. After some thought, I think this is probably doable, but it would be greatly helpful if I could read Italian, a language I've never been terribly interested in. There are several books on Italian costuming of the period, written in Italian and not translated. The suggestion was to write something new that basically says the same things as the old, couching the information in modern text and with more/better pictures, gathering information from the many sources available... a summary work ( ... )
