open, but with invites sent to Mad and Laura

Clan funeral rites, unlike everything else in their ritual-suffused lives are not particularly elaborate. For Shem, the elemental killed by a sniper unit that decided it wanted to take some of these terrifying invaders with it, his ashes are simply laid in an urn (there had been a darkly hilarious conversation where Resnick interrogated their ( Read more... )

[Recently let out of the brig for the reason of a funeral... not the most welcoming of news. Mad bowed her head in respect as the ashes were scattered. She remained a little longer, both to pay her respects in her own way and to get a little of the fresh air - such as it was before she finally joined the Wolves.]

You think he earned it Resnick?

"It is hard to s-" His noteputer beeped showing a message. He removed it, read the fine print. "In light of the nature of the Warrior's death and upon review of his codex, we have decided... He earned it!" And there was much rejoicing a cheer.

[Mad seemed to smile at that.]

Well guess that's my answer.

[Shem. Tough bastard. If anything his rough treatment during the training sessions helped her all the more.]

"Someday I will earn that honor for myself as well." Oh man, not the thing to say to an already vulnerable feeling Mad. "And he will live on through the training he gave you, quiaff?"

So the rescue operation was not entirely without loss...

[Devon is there - not just wandering in as usual, but as an official representative.]

His sacrifice will not be forgotten.

Resnick bows to the Gucun representative but retains his wolfish (natch) grin.

"His sacrifice has guaranteed him a place in the breeding program. He will live on in the next generation. And we have a vested interest in a stable Gucun too..."

Had she figured out that they were basically neighbors or had the time shenanigans basically shielded that from view?

I'd rather the whole thing happened without additional casualties. But this is the kind of world where what you want and what you get are two very different things.

Of course. An expansionist, blood-thirsty State is only a danger - to others, and itself.

He couldn't comment on that. They weren't expansionist but many of them were bloodthirsty. They'd been made that way.

"Aff...Ah, you are Devon Kwan, quiaff? Laura Ericks has told me of you..."

Seyla.

...I'm going to miss him.

"We all will. However his actions today made it probable his genes will be incorporated into the breeding program. There will be a sibko much like him soon enough..." A frightening thought, but one that gave comfort to most Clan warriors, and almost a sense of immortality.

It's strange to think that...

[Laura pauses for a moment, trying to think how to express the thought diplomatically.]

...they'll have his genes, but he won't have any hand in their upbringing, the way he's trained others.

"I can tell what you are thinking. 'This is all very cold and impersonal', quiaff? But we take comfort in belonging to a lineage and in knowing that if we do well a part of ourselves will survive to the next generation." He's known her long enough that her reactions are fairly obvious to him.
