Daydreaming of a wannabe space explorer

May 23, 2012 21:14

Looks like stuff is back to normal. As normal as you can tell with White Chalice.

[Taking a break with maintenance and cryo weapon manufacture. Lowe is chillin' on the deck, looking up into the sky.]

What do you know about Jupiter? And other planets that ain't Mars or Earth? Any colonies there?
I wonder how far humans went.

There are colonies around Jupiter, at least! But you don't want to go there.

Is that where Jovian Lizards come from?

Not just them! There's also the Jupiter Empire, and Crux Dogatie! They're a much bigger threat right now!

What's up with Jupiter and bad guys? It's like if they decided - "this planet will be the headquarters of evil".

It's an unpleasant place to live.

Sounds like you've been there already, Kincaid.

I have. Totalitarian regime aside, resources are scarce. Food, water, space...even the air you breath is all carefully rationed. The people who grew up out there are tough as hell and used to privation.

And I thought Junker ships and colonies can have it rough. Compared to that, I had a life of luxury! No wonder Jovians are so angry then...

I wouldn't be surprised if some people packed up and left already. I wonder how far you could get just putting engines on a colony...

[Laura's brought you a drink on her own break.]

It ain't that simple.

[Drink accepted!]

Colonies are good for sitting around in one place, but if you try to move one? Even in space, you'll pull it apart!
Hence why we just leave 'em around Lagrange points.

Even if it's really gentle? After all, you can just keep going.

I suppose a colony wouldn't be able to support itself if it was way out in the middle of nowhere, though. It'd be too hard a life to tempt anyone even with all the... everything, you know.

[Laura looks out at the landscape as she takes a drink from her own bottle.]

I never realized America was as badly off as this.

That, or you use reinforced materials. But between slow speed and need for resupply, you'd think people notice...

And in current condition, the Feds might not exactly like that one of their colonies is suddenly running away to who-knows-where.

Yeah...
[Talking about America now.]
Some places got hit worse than others, but it's pretty bad on average.

Are you just talking about the solar system and human colonies?

Irgel founded plenty of colonies too before giving Imperialism a try...

space_mcgyver May 24 2012, 14:34:41 UTC
Yeah, I actually meant humans. Irgelions had different technology, right? I'm just wondering how far you can go with stuff that's freely available on Earth.

curseu_reflexes May 24 2012, 14:46:21 UTC
Yeah. For one, there are metallic alloys they had that aren't present here.

As for "how far you can go", I know Mr. Herrera was really big on trying to use solar sails for deep space exploration. It would take a while for a craft to build up speed, but it would certainly be a cheap way to travel!

Pushed by rays that are already there anyway, huh? I don't know technical details but... sounds like a plan!

There's the Mejiere and Taraak planet colonies. Those are over a year and a half away from here. Of course I doubt they're founded yet but it could have happened.

True that - but that's in the future, and I want to explore planets and stuff in my lifetime!

Maybe some faster than light travel would work out then? Develop that for quicker travel?

You can't do that without breaking physics y'know... nevermind breaking physics is what White Chalice does on a regular basis.
