So, the bike is a prototype? Running out of juice too quickly, sounds like a serious flaw in design to me.

Actually it's because of the power pack. Ever try using a living organism to create enough juice for a robotic frame? Luckily Valks use a different system, but the Cyclones originally weren't built as combat units, just for scouting. Every repair I do to it I try to tweak it, but really what I need is a better power source than a plant.
[She kicks the unit to open the hatch where the Protoculture battery happens to be.] And apparently only one planet in the system that has the plant used in that battery. All because we lucked out as the crash pad for the Macross.
