"Tell me again, Veruca, why I should allow you to join our organization?"

Cally gulped and put on her best smile. It was hard to not think of the man across the table as she remembered him. As her former principal, the man who forced her to perform in a school pageant.

"I don't have any official Earth records, for one," she said. "Plus I'm really good with gadgets and stuff? So that's good too. Plus I've been through basic training for the colonial fleet, and passed all those tests. Plus my other training from my... special school."

Jack Bristow gave her a long hard look. He wasn't normally called in for these sorts of things, and it seemed rather improper to him that he was called in on this at all. He knew her already, for one.

"And you didn't continue with your own military because why, exactly?" he asked.

"Nuclear holocaust," Cally said quietly.

Jack had not been informed of this. "I believe we have room for you here," he said simply. "You'll not be promoted to field agent for some time, however. There will be a briefing tomorrow. I expect you to be in attendance, ready to begin your work."

"Thank you sir," Cally said, reflexively saluting. Jack stood up and exited the room. He paused as the doors shut behind him. He expected the muffled squeeing that he observed. He just wanted to be sure.

----

"As you know, we have a new agent in the briefing today," Jack said, sitting at his usual spot at the table. He had replaced Agent Vaughn after an unforeseen spoon accident. "Agents Santos, Parker, and Parker, I believe you are already familiar. Agents Weiss, Flinkman, Sydney, this is Agent Cally. She'll be assisting Marshall, for now."

"She'll be what?" Marshall stammered. He waved awkwardly at Cally, his mouth opening and closing without actually saying anything.

Nadia simply smiled broadly at Cally from across the meeting table, as did the recently wedded agents Jarod and Maureen Parker. Fandom time had played tricky things on everyone. The couple was now well into their twenties, Nadia less so, and Cally had only left the graduation ceremony two months previous.

"If I could call everyone's attention, we have a very special mission to brief everyone on," Jack said. He stood and indicated the monitor. "We have a report of infiltration of the most dire consequences. In a little island off the coast of Virginia."

Weiss and Sydney exchanged glances, confused. Marshall was still too busy staring at Cally, trying to not look like he was staring at Cally. Parker, Jarod, Nadia, and Cally all looked at each other knowingly.

"For those not in the know," Jack said, his gaze imperceptibly shifting over to Weiss and Sydney. "The island is called Fandom. It is the home to a school of students that all could possibly pose a risk to the US government and its people. They are normally kept in check by a woman called Zoe Washburn." Jack cleared his throat. "Our intel indicates that Anna Espinosa has replaced her. We need to investigate this intel first hand. And if there is an indication that it is true, the most drastic measures will need to be taken."

Weiss raised a hand. Jack nodded at him.

"Not that I don't trust our intel," Weiss said. "But what possible importance could one high school be to the K-Directorate?"

"Thank you for volunteering to be the first man in," Jack replied simply. "The first hand account will do you good."

Weiss raised an eyebrow, but accepted the situation.

"If there are no further questions, I dismiss you all, though I expect everyone back here in two hours once the first plan of action is calculated."

Marshall raised his hand this time.

"Actually, does this mean she's going to share my office?" he asked, trying to point at Cally without actually pointing at her, as that would be rude.

Jack Bristow did not facepalm. Jack Bristow merely mentally facepalmed. Many times.

"Two hours, back in this room," he said simply, and everyone quickly filtered out.

To be continued!
