I am pretty sure that everyone who follows my journal is also following thebaconfat (and if you're not you should reconsider your life choices immediately), so most of you probably already know that we are replaying FFVIII ( Read more... )

Also, some day I would really like to hear your thoughts on Zell! He seems to be a character that's really stuck with you (which I can't blame you for, he's one of my favorites too).

Really, this is what I think of Zell. This fic always stays with me because it's such a perfect picture of Zell I really don't have anything else to add. He's not the most intelligent guy on the planet, but he's smart where it counts. He's got a lot of bluster but he's sensitive for all that. His family is important to him. And when he moves, it's like he dancing, until you get close enough. Strength. Speed. Grace.

Basically I think Zell is amazingly competent and badass and actually a really good commander post-game. And also that if someone is close enough to him he can take them down, no matter who they are or what weapon they're carrying.

the initial shock of 'he over-reacts to EVERYTHING'

I knooow, his intro video, you're just like, oh man this guy is going to be so annoying and full of himself and then! Well, yes, he is annoying, but he is adorable and insecure and surprisingly not what you expect at all. I love the paradoxes in the FFVIII characters, how they're all these legendary heroes with godlike superpowers who are also insecure, emotionally stunted teenagers. Seifer, Zell,, Squall, and Quistis in particular are all these tremendous badasses who are also... kinda pathetic.

I am always disappointed that Seifer isn't as awesome in the game as he is in my head.I knoooow. I mean, he does do some pretty badass stuff, and I think there's something to be said for leaving Garden behind (which, at least in the bit we see, doesn't treat him very well) to go after something that he clearly seems to think is the right thing to do, even if... he mostly seems to think that because it's the most dramatic and romantic thing to do and he doesn't seem to be very in touch ( ... )

I like to pretend that "canonically" in fic they never, like, got to level 100 because that's kind of ridiculous. There's no way to make up enough missions that would actually challenge them, unless all of the missions are related to new Weapons running around or Malboro fights. But, uh, that went on kind of a tangent. I LIKE EMOTIONALLY STUNTED CHARACTERS! :D ( ... )

YES. THERE SHOULD HAVE BEEN A GRANDIOSE SPEECH, to communicate why Seifer is doing this, to rub in Squall's face that he has the upper hand now, and to show that Seifer honestly believes that what he's doing is right, protecting the persecuted Sorceress from the evil mercenaries. And instead we get the cliff's notes, and nobody really reacts properly to the fact that Squall was just fucking tortured (except Squall, who reacts properly for Squall, and it's actually a little horrifying him saying that it was hell because it's Squall saying that), and Seifer walks away instead of properly savouring his power trip.

Yeah, I think I was somewhere around Disk 2 of writing Sidelines when I discovered that Rinoa is actually awesome when she and Squall are not in love. (Or possibly sooner; I had this idea years ago to write an AU story where Squall dies in the parade, Garden gets occupied and she has to lead the fight against Ultimecia, which I still kind of wish I'd written.)

I kind of agree about Quistis, too. I think one of the reasons I'm kind of reluctant to replay the game (but really should if I'm actually going to follow through with my Wrap Up Some Damn Fic Already plan) is because a lot of my favorite characters don't come off too well without any of the post-game character development I load on them. Like, I don't really respect Seifer at any point in the game until he hits bottom at the end of Disk 3. Or Quistis pretty much ever.

Okay, I really really want to read that now.

YES!

The trouble with Quistis I think is that she seems to have done all her being awesome before the game started. And then the game picks up right where she's kind of having a breakdown.

It always takes me by surprise when I (re)discover that Rinoa is kind of awesome! I'll probably go back on that a little when she goes into a coma and Squall suddenly goes crazy and then there's that scene in the Ragnarok after you've slaughtered all the Propagators, but.

an AU story where Squall dies in the parade, Garden gets occupied and she has to lead the fight against UltimeciaHoly CRAP I want to read that. It would be really fascinating to see her have to transfer being a leader of a small band of resistance to the leader of a small band of SeeDs. And rallying everyone together. And people talking to her about tactics, which I kind of think she would pick up much quicker than anyone would expect ( ... )
