Geisha?

Oct 16, 2003 00:41

I'm minutes away from ordering a Geisha costume to wear to a Halloween party, but something concerns me about it. Despite how attractive I find it, I have to wonder if it's offensive. So, is it?

With my paid account, I can put this up as a poll:

Defined by wordreference.com, a geisha is "a professional female companion for men in Japan, trained in music, dancing, and the art of conversation."

The term is certainly connoted with prostitution, but this isn't the offensive part. I'm wondering if it's offensive to wear a kimono and essentially dress as though I'm Japanese when I'm not. :-\

hmm. well I am not the right person to ask that, BUT when you think about it, how many times do people dress like that, and NOT for halloween or what not?

I never saw those pictures you put up, because I couldn't get into the photo album. I had the password and signed up for an account and everything! But no luck. :P

I think it's awesome that you are concerned the costume might be offensive. :-)

I personally don't think it is. Why do you think it might be? Is it because you are dressing up as someone who is traditionally asian when you are not? I've seen asian Elvis impersonators and that's kind of the same thing.

You hit the nail on the head as to why I fear it will be offensive. Anyway, the overwhelming majority seems to say that it's not but I can always worry about that one person who will think it is. :-\
