I'm trying to decide whether or not I want to go to Paris for a few days to see Barry (and Paris, obviously) and celebrate his birthday

If you're looking for good hotel deals, I found Missy a Garden Hotel by Holiday Inn a year and a half ago when she visited paris on her way to spain, and it was only 50 euros a night, and right in the heart of town! So you can find them for pretty decent cost, just depends what site you use to find them (That time, i used ichhotels.com which is the parent company of holiday inn's website). So yeah. I would definitely go, and maybe just for a day or two instead of more time to cut back some cost?
i say you should go. you will probably regret it if you don't, and if money is a concern, money will always come & go, but expierences like that are once in a lifetime!!!
I'm also gonna vote go, for what it's worth. I've never been to paris (not on my top ten list either, but I'll be visiting it next year), but as a general rule, there's usually a reason why things become cliche in the first place. There's a reason why things are on the beaten track. Plus, if you hate it, you don't have to stay, and you don't have to go back, and then you'll have done it, so there'll be no need to make a special trip in case you ever get the hankering for paris.
I promise, Paris is anything but cliche. Kate, Paris is the most beautiful place in the world and you can stay and eat cheaply. I've been off the beaten path too and have had an amazing time wherever I've been, but Paris is special. You will not be disappointed, it's amazing.
When I went to Paris (8 years ago), it was in July, and yes, it was full of people. Like you, I really didn't have the interest most people would associate with traveling there, but it was convenient. I heard that it was pretty, but I also heard that the people were rude and that it was dirty, etc, etc. But I am SO glad I went!! That city is beautiful beyond words - I had no idea what I had in store for me that weekend. It's just gorgeous.
Granted, it was 1999 and they were doing cleaning for the millennium celebrations, but WOW. Nice place. I recommend going. :)
I'm going to be in the minority here, but I say Paris is just eh.
Perhaps this is because I was rather ill when I was in Paris and was on cold medication the whole time, but honestly it just didn't seem that big of a deal to me. I loved London, I want to go back there and I want to live there, but my heart is content if I don't ever go back to Paris again.

But like I said, I'm probably in the minority.
