Milo

Feb 22, 2007 22:29

I stayed home from work today so that I could syringe-feed our guinea pig Milo, who stopped eating on his own at some point on Tuesday. (For some of the details on his health, you should read Leon's post in the guinea pigs communityMilo saw the vet today for the second time in as many days. This time, he was anesthetized so that the vet could pry ( Read more... )

Poor piggy, I hope he's feeling better soon.

Thanks, Jon. He seems about the same today but all of the experts we've spoken to suggest he's got a couple days yet to recover from the surgery.

I know that's really scary (you should have seen Pica after his xrays), but when they're right off the anethesia, they're pretty out of it. Our vet tends to use ketamine, which is hallucinogenic, so who tells what he saw you as... maybe as a giant carrot coming to snuggle him! If he's not eating by tomorrow, pester your vet for pain meds. Some pigs need them to get their teeth back in gear after grinding :)

Thanks so much for responding to this and to Leon's post. Your response in the guinea_pigs community was a big factor in us taking Milo back to the vet to have his teeth checked. If he pulls through this (and I think he will), we really owe you!

Also, we called the woman who runs all of those cavyspirit/guinealynx websites (we adopted Milo from her), and she estimated a total of 3 to 4 days for his pain to go away. Pain meds would definitely speed up the process, but our vet was out today so I think we'll stick to syringing for now.

I'm glad it worked out, and that your vet was open to the suggestion! I was so glad to read that that actually was the problem, instead of something more nasty and problematic! Just keep an eye on him in the future to make sure this isn't a habit. ;)

Oh, poor sweet Milo. I hope he feels much better soon. I imagine that his head may have been throbbing because of the soreness the grinding caused. He may have just had a big headache!!!

I think so too. I know that I don't want to do anything when I have a headache so I can't really blame him for just lying in the corner these past couple of days.

:( The thought of one of my rattie girls being sick like that worries me. I know it will eventually happen - rats don't live to be more than 3 years old and many don't make it that far. My girls are all a year old now and the thought creeps up.

I hope Milo feels better and gets over whatever ails him.

Thanks for the positive thoughts. Guinea pigs live to be between 5-7 years and our three are all about 3.5, so I know exactly how you feel. It's strange to care for something that you know you'll outlive. I mean, they say that losing a child is the hardest thing for a parent to go through and our pets are like children...it's like setting yourself up for a lot of pain in the future. Why do we do this, again? :P
