Original Character Applications
Before you submit your app, you must find the keywords hidden in the Rules and FAQ pages!
If these are not included somewhere in your app as proof that you have read these pages, your app will be rejected!
❦ Applications are accepted every Wednesday.
You are free to post your app at any time during the week, however, in order not to have to wait a week until the next application acceptance day, you must post before 11:59 PM EST on Tuesday.
❦ Availability
Original characters may only be apped by players who have held a canon character at Squarewarts for three months or longer. They must be a current player, and not a former player re-apping directly with an original character.
❦ Guidelines
❧ Original characters may only be apped as students or ghosts.
Since staff are limited positions, the mods currently think it would be best to reserve those positions for canon based characters. While we do allow for classes to be suggested for prospective staff members, these are still subject to mod approval, and thus will be kept for canon-based characters only.
❧ Original characters may only be human.
As the majority of characters in Harry Potter are human, rather than another race, and do not possess special abilities such as lycanthropy, original characters may only be standard witches or wizards. While Squarewarts is definitely a world away from Harry Potter canon, we would like to maintain non-humans as a relative rarity, and thus allowed only when canon-based for fandom characters.
Naturally, you still have the choice of their being pureblood, half-blood, or muggle born.

Please check here for available Quidditch postions and here for available Prefect positions. If the position you want is taken, please note that you are still interested in the position in your app so that your character can be added to the list of reserves.
❦ Original Character Application Step-By-Step
The applications for original characters must demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the background and personality for your character. Although it is your character and ultimately you have control of their personality, we would like the application to demonstrate that you have put a lot of thought into different aspects of the character,nd that there will be consistency to their characterization throughout the game. Additionally, everyone fears the “Mary Sue” original character: we ask for a detailed application in order to avoid over idealized characters. We will be checking the lengths of sections where we have requested a minimum length!
Personality
This is the most important section. Since the character is of your creation, we are relying on your description here to give us a feel for them. You need to flesh them out so that we can understand the character you are apping.
You must explain their strengths and weaknesses; this includes positive and negative personality traits and how they help or hinder your character in everyday life. If your character has particular talents and flaws, or anything random that factors into their behavior but wouldn't necessarily go into their background, mention it here!
Please remember that while original characters are ultimately your own creation, we do expect consistency in their behavior! This section is what basis of your playing of that character will be based on, so think it through carefully! We require a MINIMUM 350 word personality for original characters.
Background
Please check the Guidelines above!
The background of your character can effect their behavior, personality and development. It may also effect the manner of relationships and interactions they might have in game. We want to see that you have a strong idea of who your character is and what they have dealt with in the past.
We require a minimum 500 word background for original characters.
Appearance
Please describe, in your own words [NOT just linking to an image] what your character will look like! Provide us with a written interpretation of the character as they will appear in Squarewarts; around 100 words is acceptable.
If you will be using a PB [Played By] for your character, please add a link here as well as providing the written description.
Preferred House; Why you think they belong in this house?
A rationale for what House you feel the character is best suited for. We'd like some explanation here but it doesn't need to be super detailed; approximately 100 words is fine, so long as you give us a thoughtful rationale.
If you cannot choose which House your character should be sorted into, please provide a rationale for each House. If you provide a rationale for a particular House, that does not necessarily mean the Sorting Hat will agree, based on the personality provided in your application.
Wand
Using the Wandlore page on the Squarewarts wiki, pick the core, wood and length of your characters wand. Please explain why each part fits your character.
Why do you want to app this character?
This is where you can tell us about some of your ideas for the character, from ideas that you have for potential growth, to why you think they'll be good for Squarewarts! Is there a particular reason you wanted to apply for this character? For example, the dynamic they might bring to the game, or themes that you wanted to explore that you could not with a canon character you currently play or are familiar with? This section should be about 100 words, minimum.
