Making one's way anywhere in this school at the moment was jarring with the changing landscape and highly damaging stars laying about everywhere, but the adventure was exciting. Or, at least, Alyss thought so. She would take this over those boggarts any day. Or the Drunk Kingdom, for that matter, too. Somewhere along the way from her office to Sam's, she had shed her school robe off (try hopping from floating island to the next with that thing flapping behind you ( ... )

As soon as he heard her enter, Sam jerked his head up and scrambled to his feet. Smooth. He could act completely smooth and she'd assume he was just fine, right?

He straightened fully, attempting a grin that was more than a little shaky. "Nah, not really." His voice sounded a bit too much like crumbling gravel, so he cleared it and tried again. "More like it's just... not something I want to get involved in."

There. Perfectly logical. And maybe now with Alyss here he'd be able to get his mind off the very bad things he should not be thinking about.

Not right. Her fine eyebrow arched as Sam scrambled to his feet, and Alyss frowned in worry. This was... not normal behavior.

She smiled softly in return to his shaky grin. "What, are you afraid the unicorns might cart you off like some of the students?" Her smile grew wider at her little joke, hoping to ease the tension he seemed to be carrying.

Alyss supposed that, yes, it was logical that he didn't want to get involved. From what she had seen and heard, with the dangers of the terrain, she believed that not many should have been involved, just in case they were hurt.

"Ha ha!" Okay, that laughter was a little forced, and Sam belatedly told himself to turn the crazy down. He wasn't worried about the unicorns carting him off; it was quite the opposite, actually. Most of the sparkling beasts seemed to have the good sense to stay the hell away from him, but what terrified him was the absolute knowledge that he could catch one if he needed to.

Thus, the heavily locked door. It was more to keep himself in than the unicorns out.

He turned away slightly, trying to take in a calming breath. Change the subject, perhaps. "You haven't, uh... nothing bad has happened since this started, have it?"
