Chiyo shuffled down the hall toward the library, her bag full of so many books it was almost heavier than she was. In one of her pockets was a bag of assorted candies, some Bertie Botts' Every Flavor Beans, some Lemon Drops, some Chocolate Frogs... a bit of everything. She'd read somewhere that it was a good tutoring technique, positive reinforcement. She would give Haku a candy for every answer her got right. She had made sure to take out all of the badly flavored beans, leaving only the good ones. It wouldn't be good to give him a vomit-flavored bean for a correct answer, after all, especially since he had helped save her
( ... )
While Haku wanted to give the struggling Chiyo a chance to lift the books herself because it would have felt insulting otherwise, he had to quickly change his mind to keep the girl from straining herself. "Lift from the knees and keep your back straight," he suggested helpfully while hoisting the bag onto the table. While impressed that she managed to haul the heavy books all that way, he was even more so that the girl wasn't using any magic to aid her despite knowing she was more than capable. Briefly he wondered if being so young and small compared to her peers made Chiyo feel like she had something to prove, but he didn't feel it was his place to ask.
"You're looking much better today," he smiled gently, not wanting to make an overt reference to her size in case it was an insecurity. "Thank you for agreeing to help me. I'm afraid I'm not very good at this subject."
Looking sheepishly up at the older boy, Chiyo gave the bag a last push to slide it further from the edge. "Ah, thank you!" While she had been raised a pureblood in a very wealthy family, Chiyo had always been taught the value of learning to do things without magic. She was great with magic, and knew she could easily float a bag of books onto a table, but physically... well, she had a lot of work to do, and to be a well-rounded person, one couldn't always take the easy road. And the sense of accomplishment was that much greater when she did things with her own two hands.
"Ah, thank you, Haku-san!" She hopped into a chair and pulled her bag closer, taking out the many books inside. "It is good to be back to normal!" She smiled brightly and took the bag of candy from her pocket. "This is for helping me! It is the least I can do, to hep you study!"
Haku was surprised at the thoughtful gesture, especially since he felt he owed her for the constant kindness. "You... you've helped me far more," he insisted gently, more out of confusion than argument. Unused to receiving gifts, they were always unexpected and Haku was uncertain the proper way to thank her. Settling for a simple "Thank you," Haku decided he must get something for the girl in return. It would seem rude otherwise.
Much more motivated to do well as not to let Chiyo down, Haku turned his attention back to the books. "Where do we start?"
