By the time the students arrived, Professor Holmes had already gathered the necessary materials for class and the objectives and assignment was written on the board.
"Today, we will be examining the ways in which numbers can affect the outcome of spells. I know you have studied spell creation and theory in the past and today's lesson will draw heavily from that. Using your charts, I'd like for you to determine for me the number that corresponds to the spell and why that number might have importance to the use or outcome of that spell. You may also want to consider syllable count in your explanation as well."
There were at least 20 spells written on the board, including basics likes "Wingardium Leviosa." It was basically a drill activity to start the class off. "When you are done, I expect these on my desk and we will continue from there."
The fifth years were in a class all their own since they were preparing for owls. Today the lesson would focus mainly on reviewing the rich history of Arithmancy and its origins. The board had the names of a few civilizations written on it that are most notable for their use of arithmancy and next to those civilizations, the names of students who would be working on them. The civilizations were as follows

The Newt level was a lot more relaxed than the previous levels it seemed. They had made it this far, so Luxord did not worry about them as much in terms of understanding the concepts.
Once everyone was seated, Luxord began, "Our objective today is to create spells based on numeric equations. Last time, as you may recall, we created several equations that produced various outcomes in terms of wealth, intelligence, luck, and beauty. Today, I want you to take those equations and create your own spells based on what the numbers tell you the spell should do. For example. The number 5 is associated with instability, so if your equation has a great deal of fives in it or perhaps equals five, the spell you create should have something to do with instability."
He looked around the room to make sure everyone was on the same page. "You have until the end of class to create your spells and at that point we will demonstrate a few of them to see the result. You may begin."

Merlin rubbed his eyes with his palms roughly. Math was never a strong attribute of his but his mother convinced him to take this class. If you work hard enough, you can do anything you want, her advice floated in his head. But create instability? Would an unstable wizard count? he wondered absently.
He looked out the window and momentarily felt at peace. The trees swayed and everything was at ease. Until he remembered he had work to do.
He began to furiously write on his parchment, filling the empty spaces with numbers and letters. Later on creating blotches and starting anew on another sheet. He looked around the class helplessly to see if anyone was having a hard time as well.

Isane listened carefully to Professor Holmes' instructions, quietly eager to get started. Admittedly, Arithmancy wasn't her strongest subject and she'd had to work hard to make it to N.E.W.T level. But this was a chance to create something new - and Isane was always happy to experiment. She studied the equations she'd written down and the textbook with the number meanings in it, and decided to go with the equation with a lot of nines in it. Nines had to do with success and influence and Isane was thinking about creating a simple little 'pick me up' spell, one that would give her a measure of confidence and self-assertion for a temporary time.
Merlin knew she needed it sometimes. If it worked, she'd definitely use it on the occasion. Speaking of Merlin, Isane noticed the student having difficulty. She didn't know him very well, but had seen him a few times to know him by name, and was willing to help out a fellow classmate. "Are you... alright there?" she asked shyly.
[OOC: hope it's okay I just said she knew his name ^.^]

Merlin bit down on his nails. They were definitely going to disappear by the time the exams were up. He tapped his quill impatiently against his desk and waited for something to give him an Eureka moment. If it didn't come soon he was going to fail. His mother would be so disappointed.
Merlin blinked when he heard a soft voice interrupting him from his panicking thoughts. He smiled politely at the girl sitting nearby. He's seen her around the school before but he was pretty sure she's in Gryffindor. He just couldn't think of her name. "I honestly don't know what I'm doing. I'm just trying to stay away from four." Merlin scratched the back of his neck nervously and sighed in defeat. "You don't have to worry about me. There's plenty of work for you to do as well. Don't want you failing on my account or anything."
After Class - For Help, A Visit, Etc.maestoso_tempoDecember 16 2009, 03:18:45 UTC
Luxord poured himself some tea, glancing with a sigh at the stack of papers that had accumulated on his desk. The one down side to giving the students assignments was you had to grade them. He took a sip of his tea, and started to gather up the books and papers on his desk.
