First years; Introduction to Potions I whoneedsarms November 24 2009, 02:41:34 UTC
A pile of papers lay carefully on Irene's desk at the front of the classroom, testimony to who had remembered to complete their homework and who had not. "Thank you to those of you who remembered to complete the task you. Those of you who did not can expect to receive a T in this assignment. You should all be well aware that I accept not late homework unless you have a note from the nurse. Since all of you are here, I expect there will be no such excuses." Her gaze was neutral, perhaps approving upon those who she recognised as repeatedly sound performers, and severe on those who were not ( ... )

Carefully supervising her students as she made her way down the rows, Irene offered quiet advice to them as she passed, if she noticed anything amiss in their potion making. The assignment, to select a potion that involved the use of rat anatomy in some form, research it for homework and then make that same potion in class seemed to be going well, at any rate, although a few students still appeared uncomfortable with having to acquire ingredients for potions that specified the eyes, tails, spleens or whatever element was required be fresh.

"Remember not to rush yourselves," Irene said calmly, leaving one bench, and moving to the front once more. "This diagram is here for the purpose of allowing you the chance to ensure you collect the correct parts of the rat," she added, indicating the careful drawing etched onto the board. "Continue thoughtfully, and you will do well."

Toph grumbled. She hated potions. First of all, the dungeons were pretty cold, so she was forced to put a warming spell on her feet so they wouldn't freeze. She sat down and raised her hand. The professor seemed forgetful that she was blind and thus couldn't read the instructions on the board. It was also hard for her to figure out some ingredients, especially the liquid ones, as most of them felt the same to her. "If you expect me to do this by myself, don't blame me if I blow up the classroom!"

Irene did not forget, nor was she unaware. Her eyebrow arched just barely, she made her way to Toph's side. These children, they seemed so unaware of their own self-indulgence, so unwilling to take steps on their own without their hands being held. As it may be, she might judge the child too harshly, but for the moment she was unimpressed.

"Miss. Bei Fong, you have taken Potions since your first year, have you not?" Irene drew her wand. "That you have not the initiative to learn a spell to turn the written word to braille is a lapse in your own judgment, and negligence to your studies. Try to think more carefully for yourself, before you condemn the abilities of others." In the same breath, she uttered the charm of which she spoke: "Reddo caecusCarefully, but not harshly, she continued. "You are here to learn the art of potion making for yourself, challenging though it is. There is not need to undermine your own abilities. Magic grants us the chance to go past human limitations. You have no need of me to hold your hand any more than ( ... )

Toph frowned and charmed the labels on the potion bottles to turn the text to braille. She didn't know who was worse. Professor Jones or Pendragon. In the end, she sided with Jones. At least she wasn't vain and stupid.

The spell that Professor Jones uttered caused the blackboard to read the instructions out loud. Toph would have to remember that spell for future classes. She carefully followed the instructions, doing her best to make the potion, despite the cold coming from the stone floor that was starting to penetrate her warming spell. Maybe next class she could conjure up a rug to stand on.

It wasn't too long before Toph heard a hissing come from her cauldron. She wriggled her nose at the sudden rotten-egg smell that came with it. What did she do now?

Quietly, Irene patrolled the classroom as the students filled in their responses to the surprise test. There had been some protest, but a few of the Ravenclaws seemed rather pleased at the prospect, and that at least was strangely gratifying.

Despite her expectations, Irene was coming to rather enjoy the different aspects of teaching. Except, of course, for the irritating protest of childish youths.

"I would like to remind you that this project is a required portion of this class, if you wish to be able to continue in your potions studies for next year. Receiving less than an A is not acceptable." Silvery blonde hair swept behind her and she was sure she caught the sound of more than a couple of gulps from around the classroom. "Unless you are prepared to spend considerable amounts of your own time in the labs I conduct on Wednesdays and Fridays ( ... )

Professor Jones, was a little intimidating to Namine, even after all this time in Potions. She didn't hate the professor or anything, on the contrary, potions was an okay class. The woman just made her act even more quiet than usual. Namine tended to take up a back corner, taking notes or paying close attention while not calling attention to herself.

She listened discreetly as Jones gave out the assignment. She looked a little troubled, but was mostly okay with the assignment. Thankfully, Namine had a good eye for detail and started slowly going over the ingredients and, based on the book descriptions, she quickly spotted several problems.

She quietly marked these down.

There were times where Irene tried to be mindful of the circumstances students were undergoing when she selected the potions for them to work on. As such, the Draught of Peace seemed a fitting one for students studying for their OWLs. Students who brewed a successful potion would be rewarded by a feeling of relaxation. Those, however, who were not careful in their administration of hellebore syrup and allowed themselves to become too stressed in the process of making the potion itself, would at best suffer a rather unpleasant stomach ache ( ... )

Potions wasn't in Kazumi's list of favorite classes, but that didn't mean she was bad at it by any means. She raised her hand to answer the Professor's question. When Professor Jones called on her she replied, "I don't think that's the case Professor Jones. For example the hellebore syrup we use, while poisonous, is actually believed to be a powerful purgative. The same with the moonstone, it's known as being a cleansing stone." Kazumi paused, looking thoughtful for a moment.

"But I guess to answer your second question, one could suggest the Mandrake root being used as a restorative. Since, well, Mandrakes can kill a person on their own, but they're used in potions that aid in de-petrification."

Edward had never really been one to answer the questions in Potions class. It wasn't that he could, no he certainly had the knowledge and ability to do so but as it were he was focused on the potion at hand, the Professor's lesson registering in another part of his mind. He was at present, preparing some of his ingredients as he reread the instructions once more.

How can I make this better, more efficient? And in this case, with conflicting results, there must be a way to safeguard against that. Edward pondered many questions while listening and preparing at the same time.

Integra's mind was half-elsewhere on Hellsing business, and so she assumed someone else would volunteer an answer to the question, as she began systematically lining up her ingredients. Creating a proper Peace Draught was not something she saw the complete benefit of, especially given that the professor had told them it was meant to enable them to study more easily. Perhaps some students were crippled with anxiety. She, on the other hand, looked at being too relaxed about exams as something to worry about in and of itself.

Of course, she'd prefer to avoid a stomachache, so she gritted her teeth and set about the task, with something less than enthusiasm.
