Year Three: Introduction to Psychology sisterpsyche November 16 2009, 23:17:12 UTC
Watching as her students trickled into the classroom, Shalice sat at her desk, tapping her fingers. When the last of them had taken their seat, she stood and walked to the front of the classroom. "Today," she said, "we are discussing the stages of sleep. Who can tell me what happens during the first stage?"

Shalice, still on her feet from her last class, took a sip of water from a glass on her desk, and headed toward a cabinet at the side of the room. Taking a key from a pocket in her robes, she unlocked it, and opened it to reveal a row of Pensieves. Turning back to her students, she motioned toward them. "I'd like you to divide into groups of two, and one of you come up here for a Pensieve."

She turned back to the cabinet and unlocked a small drawer, pulling out a small rack of vials, each vial full of a shimmering, silver-white liquid. "These are Manufactured Memories," she said. "I'll be handing them out after you've got your Pensieves set up, and you are going to work together to learn to tell true memories from false ones, using page 85 in your texts."

Gokudera frowned at the mention of groups. Why in the world were pairs needed? Still, active work with a Pensieve was almost enough temptation to make him not care about that. Manufactured memories huh?

"Right, partner first. Cool assignment second." He mumbled, eyes scanning the room for someone not yet clinging to their friend of choice in the class.

"If anyone is left without a partner," Shalice said, "you may come up to the front of the class and help me demonstrate. "I promise I won't humiliate you with my genius."

She stood next to the cabinet, handing a Pensieve to each student that came for one. After they were all set up on the tables, she took her rack of Manufactured Memories and handed each pair a vial. "Each of these vials contains five true memories, and one false one. You are to view each memory together, and looking at the table on page 85, determine and describe the false one."

Going to her desk at the front of the room, where she'd set up a vial and Pensieve prior to the beginning of class, she looked over the class. "Does anyone not have a partner?"

"The current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders is arranged on a multi-axial system," Shalice began at the start of her fifth year class. Turning to her blackboard, she wrote the numbers one through five. "You should be able to tell me what each axis is, and give at least one example for each."

Looking over her shoulder at the class, she saw a few with hands raised. "I'd also like you to turn to page 68 so we can begin discussing Axis I in depth. Now," she turned fully back to her students. "Who can tell me what Axis I is, and give me an example?"

Kazumi had her book on one side and her open notebook on the other. She was writing down what was on the board, but also taking the time to quickly flip to page Professor Tilman-Sinclair had just given them.

Finally, she looked up and noticed a few hands raised, either to ask a question or to answer the one currently being asked. Kazumi raised her hand as well, deciding she could probably answer this question.

As per usual, Azula sat first row middle with her hands folded neatly in her lap as everyone else flipped through their books. Surely she could do the same thing, only she opted not to. The Slytherin preferred a much different learning method than taking notes like the rest of her class mates.

So far, Azula found the class really rather boring. It became apparent as she stiffled a yawn. Mental disorders was not what she expected to learn from this class. While it might be helpful one day, her real goal for even bothering with the class was so that she may learn what would be taught in the next few years.

Noting Kazumi's raised hand, Shalice nodded toward the girl. "Yes, Kazumi?" The Ravenclaw was intelligent, as her house nearly guaranteed, and Shalice looked forward to being able to award points for a correct answer. She felt that she'd been taking so many lately, especially from her own house, and she'd use class opportunities to award some, whether they were to Gryffindors or not.

The professor simply raised an eyebrow at Azula's extremely apparent boredom. Students who took her class often did so for the lessons covered in later years, without realizing that every year built upon the last. If Azula didn't understand that, there was no way she'd pass the N.E.W.T.s well enough to be admitted in sixth year, and that, Shalice decided, was not her problem.

As her class settled in, Shalice perched on the edge of her desk. Her N.E.W.T. students were an interesting bunch. "How is everyone?" she asked, and at a few nods, flipped open one of her books. "Good, good," she nodded absently. "Okay, today we're starting in-depth Occlumency studies. "I want you to start the meditative techniques we went through last week, the deep breathing and the slowing down of your heart rate ( ... )

Catty couldn't help but grin as she righted herself in her seat again after Professor Tilman-Sinclair's enhanced outburst. After forcing her smile to disappear, she closed her eyes again, taking a deep breath, trying to relax herself. She'd never been particularly good at meditating, despite being taught it a couple of summers back. Really, she was just too full of energy to actually sit calmly and open herself up. Painting was her preferred choice of meditation.

With a mental sigh, she wiped those thoughts away. She was supposed to be clearing her mind, not making it even more cluttered.

Forget Chris. Forget Konohamaru.

Her chest rose and fell softly with each inhale and exhale, her body relaxing, a sense of calm overcoming the Gryffindor.

As there did not appear to be any questions, Shalice simply continued making her way around the room, stopping every so often to make a loud, abrupt noise, taking note of who jumped and who didn't. Some seemed farther along in their meditative ability than others, and those generally were the ones who had the greatest control, the ones who would learn wandless magic with the least amount of effort. It was a good idea to keep an eye on them; some got ahead of themselves and tried things before they were ready. The professor smiled ruefully at that - she'd been that type.

Passing by Catty's desk, she put a hand on her shoulder. She could feel some disturbance in the girl's emotions, though she was making an admirable effort to push it down and concentrate. "Like that," she whispered, "just focus on your breathing, let everything else fall away."

And then she moved on to cast a Noise Charm behind a Slytherin boy's head.

Shalice smiled a hello as each student walked through the door. When everyone was seated, she turned off the lights, and then cast a charm to shroud the room in darkness. In the pitch black, she could hear her students murmuring to themselves. "What I want you to do today," she said, "is work on your wordless casting." She took out her wand, and with a swish and a flick, the end lit like the moon, casting a bright white glow around the room. "You'll be trying for a Lumos," she said. "I'll be walking around checking on your progress, and if I hear any talking that isn't someone asking me a question, I'll take points ( ... )

Jaina gave nothing but a grim nod at Professor Tilman-Sinclair's instructions as she pulled out her wand and stared at it for a few moments. Wandless casting was something that she struggled with occasionally, as she wasn't used to having to deal with obstacles that only existed internally. She was a pragmatic person, and having to visualize and conceptualize magic as a moving, living force inside of her sometimes presented her problems.

However, she was also a stubborn jackass when the occasion called for it, so she was prepared to see this problem through to the solution no matter how much strain it put on her mentally.

She inhaled slowly, closing her eyes and trying to find the source of magical concentration within her. She felt it, bright and hot like a fire in the center of her mind. The only problem was getting it to move. She rolled her shoulders, extending her arm and pointing her wand outward. She felt a small tug, as the energy moved from her head slowly to the tips of her fingers and then onwards ( ... )

Wordless casting. An interesting venture to be sure, and one she was most eager to learn. Having to speak a spell at every turn was a weakness, one easily manipulated in a duel. Certainly it was a skill she would need should she take up the reins of her family's work after school.

She turned her gaze around the room, noting that Galatea had already achieved a nice steady glow while others like Jaina were still giving it an attempt.

She nodded once and closed her eyes. She slowed her breathing and relaxed, calling to mind the symbols and patterns for light that she had learned long ago. She could feel the energy from them, and she held to it, pushing it outward and to a focused point at the tip of her wand. She took a peek, saw her wand flicker once and then extinguish completely. Once more then.
