Nyota smiled at Spock, nervous and happy at once. Nervous because she wanted to prove herself as adept as possible at learning this language (the full, fluent grasp of which would probably be forever out her reach), happy because she loved languages, and learning them from a native source was the best way to learn.

Happy, too, because it was Spock teaching her. That part of herself she'd never examined too closely before, but after a week of dodging him in the halls and keeping her public journal closed thanks to Veritaserum, there was a simple fact she was finally forced to admit: she liked him. Really liked him.

"I'm ready," she told him. Then she smiled wryly and added, "Yes, I got that impression from some of the vocabulary I've been going over since our last lesson."

As human expressions went, Spock would have to surmise that the probability of another human wishing to see Nyota's smile again would be very high indeed. An experiment for a later time, perhaps, when there were more humans around to gauge reactions with. Spock relegated that thought to the area of his mind reserved for high priorities, and returned to the subject at hand.

"Then I believe it would be most prudent to conduct an overview of what was completed the previous lesson for the first ten to twenty minutes of this session, depending on your own necessities," he said simply. Well. Simply for Spock. "As our most recent tutoring session was somewhat in excess of two weeks ago, it is understandable if you require more time."

"Sure." Nyota nodded earnestly at his suggestion. "A review is always a good idea." She hesitated, then added, "I've done some review on my own in between homework over the past couple of weeks, so if you want to quiz me on what I've learned..."

She didn't want him to think that she didn't take the lessons seriously, after all. She wasn't like James Kirk, just coasting on what was learned in class and eking out a decent essay now and again to make up for all the homework he missed.

"What topics in particular have you covered?" Spock asked curiously. He was intrigued to know exactly what and how much Nyota had been able to cover on her own - while Vulcan was a notoriously difficult tongue, the other Ravenclaw excelled in all areas of language. It had been fascinating to see how the two interacted, and Spock looked forward to the tutoring sessions continuing.

He considered that thought. Perhaps it explained why, when Nyota had missed their lesson the previous week, he had been in such an odd frame of mind. He hesitated for a moment, before the brief flicker of concern pushed him to enquire, "...May I ask a personal query?"
