Ordinarily, Spock would have continued with his homework regardless of the presence of his text, and simply double-checked once it was complete and he had a copy of the book at hand.

However, this particular piece of homework was not due until the next Friday, whereas Nyota's was due in three days. As he was fully capable of completing the set work far before the assigned due date, it was only logical that he recover his own copy of the text she was missing, and perhaps assist in the endeavour to discover where her own version had disappeared to.

Having convinced himself of the logic evident in his actions, Spock easily found the Charms text in question and proceeded to the Common Room.

Needless to say, Nyota was very happy when she saw Spock entering the common room with the sixth year Charms textbook tucked under his arm. "You're a lifesaver," she told him earnestly, jumping to her feet. For a moment she was so happy about being able to finish her report that she forgot to be awkward around him. "Do you bring all your books from previous years to school? Your trunks must get pretty heavy."

An absent part of Spock noted that Nyota's presence did not evoke a negative reaction. He ignored it, solemnly handing her the book. "The likelihood of your not surviving the absence of this text is approximately point four percent," he informed her. While it certainly wasn't a joke (Vulcans did not joke), his words were not meant to be taken entirely seriously either. "Nonetheless, it would be best not to take the chance."

He blinked, once. "Do you not?" A pause. "It would be illogical to keep possession of texts utilised in earlier years of schooling, but certain information from my Fifth Year and certainly my Sixth is still pertinent in my Seventh."

Nyota blinked, taking the textbook in hand. "Well, no, I'm sure that's true," she admitted with a self-deprecating laugh, glad that her skin was dark enough that any blushes that came over her didn't easily show up. "It's just an expression. You know, hyperbole." It was very difficult to tell the difference between what Spock meant seriously and what he didn't. She wondered if he actually knew the statistics on these things, or if he was able to calculate them, or if maybe he just made it up.

"You do? I mean, that's a good point." Why had she never thought of it that way? She hoped he didn't think less of her for being unprepared. "I can usually still check my notes from previous years, though."
