While he ran errands, I secretly washed and folded a load of his laundry. When he returned from the store, he surprised me with a bunch of flowers.

Of course, in the O Henry story, the irony was that they had gotten gifts whose entire practical value was removed by the gift-giving. So it would be more like the story if you left the flowers in the living room, and then headed off for activities that didn't involve clothing ;-)
