I wonder if, for women in our generation, there's this underlying sense that they are supposed to know how to cook well. I mean, I think it's a skill that everyone should have picked up, to some degree. But you don't see as much "passing on the skills" from parents to children anymore. I got some of mine from my parents, but frankly I learned more about cooking and food in the four months I worked at the Deli in State College than any other period.
We decided to do all our meat purchases at Central Market from now on, partly because they keep sending us coupons.
I'm honestly not sure how we ended up on the CM mailing list. But, seriously, free $10 worth of PGA Steak AND $10 worth of free shrimp, as long as you spend at least $60 more? How can you beat that? Plus last night we had these quite awesome red peppers stuffed with lamb sausage. I made a sour cream & paprika sauce for them (using real Hungarian paprika, of course), and a curried risoto. Quite delightful.
memeatron was away this weekend, attending a gaming convention, so I gave myself a girly weekend. I got a cute shorty-short pixie haircut on Saturday. And on Sunday, about the time I expected him to be arriving home, I put myself in my freshly cleaned kitchen, wearing my new haircut, a little tank top, and my daisy dukes, and started baking.
i have issues with kitchens, i think, because i was forced to learn to cook, and because i associated it with my mother (i.e. not really having a career, having little life outside of the family, not having intellectual interests). but i like to tell other people how to cook using the wealth of theoretical cooking knowledge i gained by watching john. ;>
Gosh, yeah, you married yourself one heck of a cook, din'cha.
I have days when I feel like the kitchen is an imposition, like what I think you're saying about your mom. Sometimes I gotta remind myself that I like it, yeah.

Yeah, all my cooking is book learning plus practice and experimentation. I've, uh, been passing on a few tips to my mom, actually.
