I am always a little slow to warm to Tom, but I loved him in this. I liked how you showed his realization that Alex life is not all glamour, very understated, but lovely. The moments when Alex was trying to teach him to defend himself were just beautifully executed. And the end was just heart-breaking. But in a very good way.

I like how you started and ended with a quote about knowledge - nice style.
I thought it was good how you interspersed Alex's past advice with Tom's current situation, and Tom's sureness that Alex would save him.
And the bit with the girl at the end proving that after all, they're still teenage boys, and friends.
The epilogue was a nice touch to show that they both still thought of each other, and so far had at least survived to their twenty's - living very different lives.

When I first saw the characters I wasn't much excited ... but then I started reading it and it didn't take long for me to be completely enthralled by the story. It's so original and well written and utterly adorable. A true character study of the two sides of a friendship and all the emotion and understanding that lie between. Well done, I love it!

"And as they dashed off, mock-fighting and easily falling back into the rough-and-tumble relationship of the past, Tom thought that maybe, if given time, he might be able to move past what had happened."
I liked that description ("rough-and-tumble") of their relationship, and Tom's willingness to move on from what'd happened.
It was just great, especially because you incorporated scenes from the past/present/future. Great job!
