Title: Birthday Greetings, Bottle of Wine
Fandom: Battlestar Galactica
Rating: NC-17
Warnings: femslash, character death
Pairing: Athena/Boomer
Helo has been dead for three days now. It was the first round of bad crops that killed him. She had still been living on the food scavenged from the ruins, as was Hera.
He had helped harvest them and had come home looking happy, telling her how delicious fresh food was after all this time (he had eaten a ripe, red tomato right there in the field).
And she had smiled at him, glad to see her husband happy again.

The Eight who Helo had known from the rebel basestar had sobbed and shaken at his funeral. Athena had remained stoically dry-eyed. She stood with Galen, the two of them locked in a kind of odd solidarity, as it always was with them.

The only sister she misses is far, far away. Though she has spent years separating them, she still feels as close to Boomer as she ever has. She's never understood her and probably never will. She aches for someone who would understand her plight, her alienation.
Once Helo had died, to Athena most of the world fell away. There was her, her daughter and her little garden. But Boomer was a constant thought.
D’anna tells her that Boomer had been on the Hub, but she did not know if she had escaped or with who. She sneeringly calls Boomer “Cavil’s pet” and Athena grabs her by the throat and slams her face down into the mud. She wonders if it’s just her grief or if it’s self-defense.
*
The Chief visits her every day, leaves Nicky to play with Hera. Sometimes he gets this misty look in his eyes like he can’t tell the difference between her and Boomer. She knows the look because sometimes when she looks in the mirror, she can’t tell them apart either.
*
She could never stand being seen as a Cylon. But she can remember being one.
She hates herself still, for the manipulation, for the lies. And yet, all of it was for naught, now that Helo was gone. Boomer would understand that wouldn’t she?
What it was like to lose your life, but still walk around, pretending to be alive.

Some days, she sits and watches her garden gate, waiting for her sister to come back. It feels like she’s waiting to die: inevitable and pointless.
*
One day, when Hera is down for her afternoon nap, Athena hears the gate in her garden creak. Looking out the only window she has, she expects Galen, little Nicky in tow. She swallows, seeing her duplicate stroll down the small path to her small house. Her hair is pulled away from her face, wrapped in a tight bun, a few short locks falling over her forehead.
She opens the door before the other can even reach it. She stands facing her, waiting as she has done for months now, waiting for her.
Boomer steps up onto the small concrete threshold. Athena doesn’t hesitate. No one’s touched her since Helo died. She hadn’t wanted to sleep with anyone. But now, she takes Boomer’s face between her hands and kisses her. They open their mouths at the same time, each mirroring the others movements. Athena pulls her counterpart back through the door, breaking the sleeping silence of the little house.
She backs into a short cabinet, a left over from her cell on Galactica. Boomer lifts her up and sits her on the top of it. They continue to kiss, their hands placed in identical spots on each other’s heads and necks and breasts.
Boomer spreads Athena’s legs apart running her hands over the insides of Athena’s thighs. Boomer undoes the buttons of Athena’s pants, sliding them off, along with her underwear. She braces her hand against her thigh, and slips her thumb into Athena, using the knuckle of her first finger to massage her clit. Athena’s hands are on her breasts, rubbing in circles, palming them. She pushes her shirt up and Boomer leans forward, licking at one of her nipples.
Athena spreads her legs even wider, pressing forward, trying to get Boomer deeper inside her. The other Eight pressed another two fingers into her, spreading her wide, using her other hand to flick and rub at her clit. Athena knows she’s close and presses her face into Boomer’s neck, stifling a small scream as she comes.
Athena sighs contentedly into Boomer’s skin. Boomer pulls away and kisses Athena gently on the mouth. “I’m glad you’re here now.” Athena says. Boomer smiles at her wryly and Athena knows there will never be another sweet, happy smile for her again, not after everything that’s happened. “I was always right here with you.” Boomer says, looking out the window to the garden gate.
