This is so nice. And the idea of Vayne, in his own, smooth way, of having something of a crush on Cid-- and totally not being at all school-boy about it, but still-- is cute. Well, sort of, if you ignore the character of the people involved. Anyway, thank you for taking this!
Nuances is such a wonderful title for this. The fic is just so full of them, so rich and wonderful to read. Cid and Venat's dialogue is a work of art, not just for the pentambs but for the words themselves and the flow and meaning behind them. The discussion of romance and esteem in particular made me smile.
Very interesting Vayne, here. He's less ironclad, more vulnerable than I've seen in most fics recently. I like the idea that he lets himself go a bit around Cid, that he's more interested in him than the others around him. I also liked Cid's estimations of Vayne (especially his frank annoyance with his tendancy not to knock) and Venat's ability to see right through him.
It always pleases me, in these more hectic days, to find a short read as good as this one. ^_^ Many thanks!
Thank you! I felt like Cid's interactions with Venat were the strongest part of this -- the influence of Venat's suggestions on Cid's line of thought throughout the game just seemed so central.
And I'm glad that Vayne works! I liked that he wasn't a one-dimensional megalomaniac in the game, and wanted to stretch him a bit in another direction.
Rather more coherent reaction: Cid is made of win. Also, Venat referring to Vayne as "your young man"--one part jealous lover, one part long-suffering mother, all parts extremely shiny.
Cid may discover that Vayne's affection for him is less easy to manipulate than he'd thought...*hugs the crazy squishy megalomaniac*
